Tsuneishi Shipbuilding hits 600th milesone delivery in TESS bulker series

The vessel, built at the builder’s Philippines base, Tsuneishi Heavy Industries Cebu, is 63,300-dwt Ultramax Doric Flame.

The Tsuneishi Economical Standard Ship (TESS) series is “defined by outstanding fuel efficiency and a high degree of versatility, enabling it to meet a wide range of operational requirements,” the shipbuilder said.

The first TESS vessel was completed 42 years ago, in 1984, and the series has since evolved into Tsuneishi’s flagship brand.

Tsuneishi highlighted that it pioneered the 40,000-dwt TESS40 at a time when Handymax bulk carriers typically had a capacity of 36,000-dwt – a vessel that proved highly popular among European shipowners. The series later expanded to include models such as the TESS45, TESS52, and TESS58, with the 500th vessel completed in November 2019.

The latest milestone, the TESS64 AEROLINE, is a 64,000-dwt bulk carrier featuring a rounded, streamlined bow that reduces wind resistance by approximately 10% compared with conventional full-form bows.

The vessel is also equipped with an air supply system that draws fresh air directly from outside through dedicated ducting, alongside an electronically controlled engine. Together, these features deliver roughly 20% greater fuel efficiency than the TESS58.

“Since 1984, the TESS series has continued to evolve under the concept of a standardised vessel design that combines economic efficiency with versatility, while sincerely reflecting customer feedback and market needs,” said Tsuneishi director, president and executive officer Sachio Okumura.

He added that the shipbuilder will continue to “support global maritime transport by delivering vessels that are trusted and valued over the long term.”
