Shipping Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam today said radical changes will be brought to the management of Mongla Port within the next 180 days.<\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters after inspecting the port, the minister said noting the port\u2019s importance to the national economy and foreign trade, existing problems would be identified and discussed with the prime minister,.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs per the prime minister\u2019s instructions, steps will be taken to develop the port, which will positively impact employment, communication and the overall economy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Rabiul added that the government aims to centre import and export activities around Mongla Port by harnessing the opportunities of the south-western region. \u201cIf the necessary facilities are ensured, Mongla Port will soon become a full-fledged and effective port like Chittagong,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The minister said Mongla Port has been included in the government’s 180-day priority action plan and expressed hope that visible changes will be seen within the next six months.<\/p>\n

On suspended development agreements with neighbouring countries, Rabiul said they would be reviewed with national interest as the top priority, and those causing losses would be carefully examined before any decision on revival.<\/p>\n

Rabiul, who also serves as Railway Minister, said a suspension bridge over the Mongla River is needed and will be considered on a priority basis. He added that initiatives will be taken to operate multiple trains on the Mongla\u2013Khulna route by adding new coaches and engines.<\/p>\n

Earlier, the minister attended a view-exchange meeting at the Mongla Port Authority conference room.<\/p>\n

State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Dr Sheikh Faridul Islam, Shipping Secretary Nurunnahar Chowdhury, Chairman of Mongla Port Authority Rear Admiral Shaheen Rahman, and senior officials, among others, were present.<\/p>\n
