In early 2026, Changan Automobile began its Global Testing Season for 2026<\/strong>, an international validation program to push next-generation battery electric vehicles to their limits and demonstrate that they will exceed expectations even in harsh and icy climates.<\/p>\n

Changan launched its World Testing Programme in Yakeshi, Inner Mongolia, during the dead of winter when the weather outside was extremely cold. In addition to a media event, the launch of Changan\u2019s Programme showed that there will be a time in the future when vehicles will be tested in harsh environments that most would not venture to try.<\/p>\n

What Changan is doing is testing their cars on real-world extremes instead of solely in laboratory tests<\/strong>. These extreme conditions include extreme cold, rough terrain, and harsh weather conditions. These tests are more than just an endurance test for their cars; they are also a necessary adventure for the actual car.<\/p>\n

Changan states that the objective of any extreme cold scenario, i.e., driving over ice, sudden pressure tests on batteries, is to create safer and more reliable real-world travel for regular users.<\/p>\n

How SDA intelligence helps your car see what\u2019s coming next<\/h2>\n

A unique feature of this program is called SDA Intelligence, a system designed to assist in the proactive stabilization of a vehicle<\/strong> rather than solely relying on passive safety features. What does this mean? Your vehicle has just experienced a tire blowout while on an icy road. An average car would likely have difficulty remaining stable.<\/p>\n

However, through SDA Intelligence, these systems forecast and stabilize vehicles ahead of time, prior to instability causing danger. Several Changan vehicles equipped with SDA systems were tested under extreme conditions in Yakeshi.<\/p>\n

The SDA system successfully performed three of the most commonly feared scenarios by a driver, including performing an emergency lane change, detecting a sudden obstacle, and maintaining vehicle stability when driving on low-traction surfaces, just as the Hyundai Motor Group\u2019s new flagship battery hub<\/a>, accelerating next-generation EV technology.<\/p>\n

Successfully demonstrating these tests provides a significant advancement in motor vehicles\u2019 ability to operate in these environments.<\/p>\n

How the battery revolution makes sure performance counts when it really matters<\/h2>\n

Smart driving technologies are receiving many headlines, but there\u2019s another technology being developed and tested that will change the way electric vehicles (EVs) are manufactured and used around the world.<\/p>\n

Changan has partnered with one of the largest battery manufacturers in the world, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited, to validate sodium-ion batteries in multiple vehicles through winter and summer tests and ultimately validate their use in the production of future electric vehicles, just as the updated Toyota bZ4X with a longer range and upgraded battery<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Why use sodium instead of lithium? Replacing lithium with sodium has the potential to improve safety<\/strong>, affordability, and temperature performance of electric vehicles. Sodium batteries have demonstrated stable discharge performance at sub-40\u00b0C in extreme environments like Yakeshi and have also demonstrated their ability to maintain their capacity when discharged under extreme amounts of electric energy.<\/p>\n

From testing grounds to real roads around the world<\/h3>\n

Changan is not finished validating vehicles under cold weather conditions. Changan has scheduled the 2026 Global Testing Season to include these vehicles in a range of climate conditions from the humid tropics of Southeast Asia to the thin air of the Alps in Europe, as well as extended distance driving tests, so they can test various performance aspects such as durability, chassis design, handling at high elevation, and long-distance driving reliability.<\/p>\n

Changan\u2019s goal is to create cars that can be used with great success in many different environments, rather than just being successful under perfect conditions, by validating its designs in practical settings, not through simulations.<\/p>\n
