The sale still requires the blessing of Zim shareholders, industry regulators and the state of Israel, which owns a stake in the shipping business.<\/p>\n<div class=\"asset-breakout-ads visible-xs\">\n<div class=\"tnt-ads-container text-center \"> <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The two companies said they\u2019ll continue to operate independently and that it\u2019ll be \u201cbusiness as usual\u201d until the deal is sealed. They&#8217;ll continue to collaborate under existing vessel-sharing agreements.<\/p>\n<p>The tie-up will generate up to $400 million in cost savings and boost Hapag-Lloyd\u2019s global fleet to more than 400 ships with the yearly capacity to transport than 18 million standard 20-foot-long containers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"asset-breakout-ads visible-sm\">\n<div class=\"tnt-ads-container text-center \"> <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>CEO Habben Jansen said customers \u201cwill benefit from a significantly strengthened network\u201d along most key global trade routes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will particularly strengthen our presence on Atlantic routes, where we will become the second-largest carrier,\u201d Jansen said at a news conference after the agreement was signed.<\/p>\n<p>Yair Seroussi, chairman of Zim&#8217;s board, said the decision to sell followed \u201ca thorough strategic review\u201d and a \u201ccompetitive bidding process.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"asset-breakout-ads visible-xs\">\n<div class=\"tnt-ads-container text-center \"> <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe believe this represents the most prudent and beneficial transaction for all Zim stakeholders,\u201d&nbsp;Seroussi&nbsp;said in a written statement.<\/p>\n<p>A previous unsolicited offer from an investment group that included Zim&#8217;s current CEO was rejected as too low in November.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-md-4 fixed-col-right hidden-sm hidden-xs\">\n<div class=\"fixed-sticky-rail-spacer\">\n<div class=\"fixed-sticky-rail\" data-pos=\"1\">\n<div class=\"tnt-ads-container text-center \"> <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"asset-breakout-ads visible-md visible-lg\">\n<div class=\"tnt-ads-container text-center \"> <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"row text-row\" data-breakout=\"2\">\n<div class=\"col-md-8\">\n<p>The Haifa-based cargo line was started in 1945.
