Sam Altman, head of ChatGPT maker OpenAI, told a global artificial intelligence conference on Thursday that the world \u201curgently\u201d needs to regulate the fast-evolving technology.<\/p>\n

An organisation could be set up to coordinate these efforts, similar to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), he said.<\/p>\n

Altman is one of a host of top tech CEOs in New Delhi for the AI Impact Summit, the fourth annual global meeting on how to handle advanced computing power.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor an obvious example, there\u2019ll be extremely capable biomodels available open-source that could help people create new pathogens, he said on stage.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need a society-wide approach about how we\u2019re going to defend against this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Frenzied demand for generative AI has turbocharged profits for many companies while fuelling anxiety about the risks to individuals and the planet.<\/p>\n

\u201cDemocratisation of AI is the best way to ensure humanity flourishes,\u201d Altman said, adding that \u201ccentralisation of this technology in one company or country could lead to ruin\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not to suggest that we won\u2019t need any regulation or safeguards,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe obviously do, urgently, like we have for other powerful technologies.\u201d<\/p>\n

Many researchers and campaigners say stronger action is needed to combat emerging issues, ranging from job disruption to sexualised deepfakes and AI-enabled online scams.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe expect the world may need something like the IAEA for international coordination of AI,\u201d with the ability to \u201crapidly respond to changing circumstances\u201d, Altman said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe next few years will test global society as this technology continues to improve at a rapid pace. We can choose to either empower people or concentrate power,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cTechnology always disrupts jobs; we always find new and better things to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Generative AI chatbot ChatGPT has 100 million weekly users in India, more than a third of whom are students, he said.<\/p>\n

Earlier on Thursday, OpenAI announced with Indian IT giant Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) a plan to build data centre infrastructure in the South Asian country.<\/p>\n
