Air cargo volume at Puerto Rico’s three international airports reached 621 million pounds in 2024, with nearly half consisting of pharmaceuticals and medical devices, according to a report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) released Tuesday by Governor Jenniffer Gonz\u00e1lez Col\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

The study, titled \u201cPuerto Rico: Information on Air Cargo Infrastructure and Operations,\u201d was prepared in compliance with a provision included in the 2024 Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act, championed by Gonz\u00e1lez Col\u00f3n during her tenure as Resident Commissioner in Congress.<\/p>\n

According to the report, the most significant growth in cargo traffic was recorded at Luis Mu\u00f1oz Mar\u00edn International Airport, solidifying the island’s strategic role in the supply chain of high-value industries, particularly pharmaceuticals.<\/p>\n

The governor maintained that air cargo is an essential component for strengthening advanced manufacturing in Puerto Rico and positioning the island as a key center under U.S. jurisdiction, at a time when industrial relocation initiatives (\u201creshoring\u201d) are being promoted.<\/p>\n

The GAO analysis also identifies areas of opportunity to sustain projected growth, including warehouse improvements, expansion of cold storage facilities, and increased staffing for federal cargo inspections.<\/p>\n

The Gonz\u00e1lez Col\u00f3n administration affirmed that it will work with the private sector, airport authorities, and federal agencies to implement the report’s recommendations and continue strengthening the island’s air cargo infrastructure.<\/p>\n
