MUMBAI: <\/b>Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Group<\/a> has ordered four 8,000 Deadweight Tonnage<\/a> or DWT general cargo vessels at China\u2019s Wuhu Shipyard Co., Ltd<\/a> for an undisclosed price, in a blow to Narendra Modi government<\/a>\u2019s efforts to crank up India\u2019s shipbuilding sector with a \u20b969,725 crore package announced last year.<\/p>\n

JSW Group<\/a> is the second Indian conglomerate to order ships from China, the world\u2019s biggest shipbuilder, in recent months.<\/p>\n

Last Year, Adani Group-owned Ambuja Cements Ltd<\/a> ordered seven conventional bulk carriers<\/a> of 9,400 DWT each at China\u2019s state-run shipbuilder Nantong Xiangyu Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co., Ltd in a deal worth some $100 million.<\/p>\n

The shipbuilding order marked JSW Group\u2019s return to the Sanshan Economic Development Zone, Wuhu City, Anhui Province-based Wuhu Shipyard where it had previously ordered 10 bulk carriers<\/a>. The ships will be classed with the Indian Register of Shipping<\/a> (IRClass), a ship classification society.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe 10 vessels previously delivered, characterised by efficient construction lead times and robust build quality, have won the shipyard high acclaim and full confidence from the client,\u201d Wuhu Shipyard said while announcing the order from JSW Group on February 13.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a leading industrial conglomerate and globally renowned shipowner in India, JSW Group\u2019s repeat orders serve as a powerful testament to Wuhu Shipyard\u2019s technical expertise, construction quality, and performance credibility. Wuhu Shipyard remains committed to lean manufacturing standards, strictly adhering to quality control and schedule management to ensure the delivery of high-quality vessels through strong performance fulfilment,\u201d the shipbuilder said.<\/p>\n

JSW Group and Wuhu Shipyard did not disclose the price of the ships.<\/p>\n

The newly contracted sister vessels measure 122 meters in length overall, with a molded depth of 7.2 meters and a molded breadth of 20 meters. Designed with double-bottom construction, the ships adopt conventional diesel-powered propulsion systems, featuring twin-screw, twin-rudder configuration, two cargo holds, and hydraulic folding hatch covers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe vessels are tailored for coastal transportation<\/a> of bulk cargoes within India\u2019s near-sea trading areas. With exceptional economic performance and operational flexibility, they will further optimize JSW Group\u2019s fleet composition and enhance its global logistics efficiency,\u201d Wuhu Shipyard, a first-tier shipbuilding enterprise in China, said.<\/p>\n

JSW Group\u2019s move to order the bulk carriers in China is a loss for Indian shipyards. An order from one of India\u2019s biggest conglomerates would have raised the profile of the local yard winning the contract to construct the bulk carriers in the global market, said a shipbuilding industry source.<\/p>\n

JSW Group\u2019s preference for a Chinese yard highlights the challenges faced by local shipbuilders in terms of pricing and delivery timelines, the industry source added.<\/p>\n
