It took a few innings for the Vanderbilt<\/a> offense to get going Saturday against Texas Tech<\/a> at the 2026 College Baseball Series<\/a> in Arlington, Texas, and then one huge inning catapulted the Commodores to their first win of the new season.<\/p>\n

The two-time national champions broke open the game in the bottom of the fourth inning with two doubles, a pair of home runs, three walks, an infield single and a stolen base, mixed with a wild pitch and two defensive errors from the Red Raiders.<\/p>\n

In that inning alone, Braden Holcomb contributed a home run, a double, five RBIs and a run to turn a 1-0 deficit into a seven-run advantage, and the Commodores went on to win 13-3 in a run-rule-shortened contest. <\/p>\n

The Commodores put an early end to the game with four runs in the eighth inning. <\/p>\n

The battle at GLF, home of the 2023 World Series-winning Texas Rangers, kicked off the second day of the Shriners Children\u2019s College Showdown<\/a>, and the game was broadcast live on FloCollege and the FloSports app as part of the wire-to-wire coverage of the College Baseball Series.<\/p>\n

Texas Tech did respond immediately after Vanderbilt came to life, quickly loading the bases in the top of the fifth inning, but an inning-ending double play from Vanderbilt limited the damage to just one run. <\/p>\n

The Red Raiders added another run in the top of the seventh inning, before letting the game slip away.<\/p>\n

Vanderbilt, the reigning Southeastern Conference Tournament champion, plated the 13 runs Saturday on 12 hits, paired with two errors from TTU, while leaving another 10 runners on base.<\/p>\n

Sophomore infielder Brodie Johnston led the offensive effort with a 3-for-5 performance that included two home runs, three runs scored and two RBIs. Junior Braden Holcomb contributed two hits, including a home run, five RBIs and two runs scored.<\/p>\n

The Commodores sent four pitchers to the mound, with junior right-hander Brennan Seiber getting the win. He pitched two innings, giving up one run on three hits. The starter was MLB prospect Austin Nye, who went four innings, giving up one run on two hits, while striking out six and walking two.<\/p>\n

Texas Tech used six pitchers in the game, with starter Lukas Pirko taking the loss. He surrendered seven runs (five earned) on six hits, while walking two and striking out two.<\/p>\n

Offensively, Texas Tech\u2019s three runs came on six hits, and half of the hits were from junior outfielder Kyeler Thompson, who went 3 for 4 and scored a run. <\/p>\n

Believe it or not, despite many decades of play for both teams, and the fact that both squads made it to the Men\u2019s College World Series in 2014 and 2019, Saturday\u2019s meeting was the first in history between Texas Tech and Vanderbilt.<\/p>\n

The Commodores entered the new campaign ranked 23rd in the 2026 D1Baseball Preseason Top 25 Rankings, while the Red Raiders did not make the list, as they\u2019re coming off a tough 2025 season and losing record.<\/p>\n

Both teams lost their season-opening games Friday, with Vanderbilt losing a lead late in a 5-4 loss to Texas Christian University<\/a>, and Texas Tech losing to Oklahoma<\/a>, 10-3.<\/p>\n

All six teams at the Shriners Children\u2019s College Showdown will play three games over the weekend. Arkansas<\/a> and Oklahoma State<\/a> are the other two programs in town for the first of three weekends of action at Globe Life Field.<\/p>\n

The schedule includes the Shriners Children\u2019s College Showdown (Feb. 13-15), Amegy Bank College Baseball Series \u2013 Weekend 2 (Feb. 20-22) and Amegy Bank College Baseball Series presented \u2013 Weekend 3 (Feb. 27-March 1), all of which will bring 18 teams to Arlington. <\/p>\n

This is the third appearance for the Red Raiders at the College Baseball Series in the last five seasons, including the first games of their 2022 and 2024 campaigns.<\/p>\n

The Commodores also opened the 2023 season at Globe Life Field, where they lost to TCU, before beating Oklahoma State and Texas to round out the weekend.<\/p>\n

Vanderbilt will wrap things up this year with the opening game Sunday, taking on Oklahoma State at 11:30 a.m. Eastern. Texas Tech will follow at 3:30 p.m. against No. 7 Arkansas, and the event will end with No. 10 TCU and Oklahoma at 7:30 p.m. EST.<\/p>\n
