The Indian Railways targets Rs 30,000 crore incremental revenue from new Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals<\/a> (GCTs) in the next three years. Speaking to journalists in New Delhi, Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said a new GCT policy<\/a> will bring additional freight loading<\/a> from automotive, cement, container, and salt among others. The minister said the national transporter will also prioritise hygienic travel experience<\/a>, improving the service in general class coaches and bringing them at par with reserved categories.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe existing 124 Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals are expected to increase to more than 500 in the next five years,\u201d Vaishnaw said Saturday, adding many underutilised goods sheds will be developed as GCTs and cargo facilities.

An official statement said legacy sidings developed under earlier policies can migrate to the simplified GCT framework. To curb accidents at private sector owned connecting stretches between terminals and main lines, the Railways will now \u201coptionally undertake maintenance on a payment basis,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n

The minister noted this new GCT policy is in line with the national transporter\u2019s resolve to undertake \u201c52 reforms in 52 weeks\u201d during 2026. Listing out the other reform, the minister said Indian Railways will ensure \u2018proper end-to-end cleaning of trains<\/a>, especially over long-distances.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst time in railway history, cleaning of general coaches has been fully integrated into the system,\u201d the minister said, adding this takes forward the earlier \u2018Clean Train Station\u2019 concept, which provided thorough cleaning at limited stations.<\/p>\n


\u201cThis is now being replaced with a continuous cleaning model from the train\u2019s origin to its destination,\u201d the statement said.
The new cleaning approach will be immediately rolled out in four to five trains per zone – primarily long-distance and high footfall trains. \u201cA total of 80 trains have already been identified across zones in the first phase,\u201d Vaishnaw said, adding the reform will be implemented across all trains of Indian Railways over a three-year period.
