The meltdown in IT stocks that began a few days go is continuing from the US to India. Feb 12 was one such day for the IT index with all stocks coming under selling pressure. Bellwether stocks such as Infosys and TCS dropped by 5.57% and 5.37% respectively.<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

Kolkata: <\/strong>Infosys (-26%), TCS (-32%), HCL Tech (-14%), Wipro (-30%), Tech Mahindra (-8%). A horror story is playing out in the IT stocks. The above figures depict the decline the bellwether stocks suffered recently and from their 52-week highs. For example, TCS dived as much as 32% from its all-time high it reached in August 2024.<\/p>\n

AI jitters<\/h3>\n

The decline in IT stocks is caused by the impact of Artificial Intelligence on traditional IT companies. The example of US company Anthropic is a case in point. New technology such as AI agents like Cloud 4.6 and Cowork triggered concerns among investors about whether AI will undermine the traditional business model of Indian IT companies.<\/p>\n

Usually IT services industry work on headcount-based billing, which means the more the people, the more work and the higher the revenue. However, AI has shown it could disrupt this model and a lot of tasks can be accomplished in a small time with very few employees.<\/p>\n

Black Friday<\/h3>\n

Feb 12 was the day when the IT index displayed a spectacular drop. Bellwether stocks such as Infosys and TCS dropped by 5.57% and 5.37% respectively. TCS reached its 52-week low. Other IT majors such as HCL Technologies and Tech Mahindra slid by 4.44% and 2.91% respectively.<\/p>\n

Today too, IT stocks have come under intense selling pressure. At 10:15 am, Infosys was 6.22% down, TCS 4.86% down, HCL Tech was 4.76% down, Wipro was 4.02% down and Tech Mahindra was 3.32% down. Concerns about the possible disruption related to Artificial Intelligence (AI) particularly affected the tech stocks. All of tehse was pulling the market deep into the red on Friday morning.<\/p>\n

US market drop<\/h3>\n

The US stock market witnessed a sharp decline on Thursday Feb 12. Major indexes were under pressure amid heavy selling in technology stocks and growing concerns about artificial intelligence (AI). The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 669.42 points to close at 49,451.98. The S&P 500 fell 108.71 points to 6,832.76, while the Nasdaq Composite fell the most, 469.32 points or 2.03 percent, to close at 22,597.15.<\/p>\n

This weakness in the US market also impacted the ADRs of Indian IT companies. Infosys\u2019 ADRs fell more than 7% intraday, falling to $14.59. Wipro\u2019s ADRs, meanwhile, fell 5.4% to reach $2.26.<\/p>\n
