BorgWarner<\/a>, an American automotive and e-mobility supplier, on Thursday said it has secured an expanded series-production award for its battery management system<\/a> (BMS) from a global original equipment manufacturer (OEM), extending an existing supply programme that has been in production since 2023.<\/p>\n

According to the company\u2019s statement, the expanded award will support additional B-segment and C-segment passenger cars, as well as light commercial vehicles, for battery-electric vehicle<\/a> (BEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle<\/a> (PHEV) applications beginning in 2029.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs our customer adds new electrified vehicle lines, we are upgrading compatibility to help them scale efficiently while maintaining the safety, durability and performance expectations that drivers rely on,\u201d said Stefan Demmerle, vice-president of BorgWarner<\/a> and President and General Manager, BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems. <\/p>\n

The system supports fast direct current charging communication and includes built-in controls and diagnostics designed to help meet demanding safety expectations, including Automotive Safety<\/a> Integrity Level D functional safety goals. The scalable architecture can be configured for a wide range of BEV and PHEV battery pack designs and is suitable for applications operating up to 800 volts.<\/p>\n

BorgWarner\u2019s BMS is a modular system with a central battery monitoring unit connected to cell monitoring units located at the battery modules. Together, they monitor charge level, battery health and temperatures, measure cell voltages, and perform passive cell balancing to help optimise performance and support long-term durability.<\/p>\n

The compact module-level units enable flexible packaging options, and the electronics platform can be upgraded to support future functions. The expanded programme builds on a design already validated in series production, allowing the OEM to leverage established functionality and a proven supply footprint as it adds new electrified vehicle lines.<\/p>\n

The system is designed to support a range of electrified vehicle platforms as automakers scale their BEV and PHEV portfolios. <\/p>\n
