On Sunday, 8th February 2026, I returned my rental car \u2014 a Toyota Prius \u2014 as I was on duty for the weekend at my Reserve Air Force Base in Little Rock, Arkansas. While handing over the keys, it struck me how normal this car is here, and yet how it never really found acceptance back home in India.<\/p>\n

That thought stayed with me during the flight back (thanks to United\u2019s free Wi-Fi and a lot of idle time), and I ended up jotting down a list of cars that India \u2014 despite being one of the world\u2019s largest automobile markets \u2014 has either missed out on or prematurely rejected. And they are globally mainstream, proven, reliable cars.<\/p>\n

From Toyota –
1. Yaris
2. Corolla – Sedan, Hatchback, and Cross
3. Prius
4. RAV-4<\/p>\n

From Honda –
1. Civic
2. Accord
3. CR-V
4. HR-V<\/p>\n

From Hyundai –
1. Sonata
2. Santa Fe<\/p>\n

From Volkswagen –
1. Jetta
2. Passat<\/p>\n

This made me wonder \u2014 is there a bias among manufacturers when it comes to treating Indian buyers differently, or is it genuinely a case of market demand not supporting these cars?<\/p>\n

Because this isn\u2019t the first time we\u2019ve seen something like this. When Global NCAP crash tests began highlighting results around 2014, they revealed an uncomfortable reality \u2014 in several cases, safety features were limited to higher trims, and some India-specific models performed significantly worse in crash tests compared to their global counterparts. That phase raised important questions about how manufacturers were positioning products for the Indian market. And now with Bharat NCAP, manufacturers have to comply, even though it is strangely not made mandatory.<\/p>\n

With many enthusiasts who genuinely prefer these cars, I feel that some manufacturers may have made a miscalculation by either discontinuing them prematurely or choosing not to introduce their newer generations at all. In due process, a passionate group of car buyers has been left underserved.<\/p>\n

As a sedan enthusiast, I can\u2019t help but feel that India continues to miss out on some truly global icons.<\/p>\n
