The GVSU Board of Trustees voted in unanimous support at its Feb. 6 meeting to renovate the L.V. Eberhard Center and construct a $65 million technology lab as an addition to the building. The plan faced pushback from some faculty who raised cost and AI-related ethical concerns with the technology buildout. <\/span><\/p>\n Trustees voted to authorize issuing bonds not to exceed $139 million to support the development. Fishbeck will serve as the project\u2019s architect and engineer, and Pioneer Construction will be the general contractor.<\/span><\/p>\n The bonds are expected to be issued pending authorization from the state Legislature and governor, said GVSU spokesperson Chris Knape. GVSU says the Blue Dot Lab and Eberhard renovations could be completed in August 2028 if construction is able to proceed in May, though the timeline is dependent on the state.<\/span><\/p>\n Keep up with all things West Michigan business.<\/i><\/b> Sign up for our free newsletters today<\/i><\/b><\/a>.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n The tech center addition, called Blue Dot Lab, will be a technology-focused innovation center with seven classrooms, four research labs, a teaching lab, student incubator suite, multi-purpose meeting and event space, cafe and collaboration space. The 58,247-square-foot facility will house the College of Computing, Academic Computing Institute and the Institute for Cybersecurity Education and Research.<\/span><\/p>\n In 2023, lawmakers approved $30 million in funding for The Blue Dot Lab as part of a state budget supplemental, which will cover the rest of the project in addition to donor funding, Knape said. <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe university continues to engage potential donors about the project, but no additional debt is expected to be needed beyond what the board approved,\u201d Knape said.<\/span><\/p>\n GVSU is now just waiting for state construction authorization before it can move dirt, Knape said. <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe delay, despite the award of the capital outlay funding more than 2 years ago, is frustrating and we remain hopeful that the legislature will quickly move to construction authorization so that we can continue our work on this impactful project,\u201d Knape said.<\/span><\/p>\n Meanwhile, a group of GVSU professors are critical of advancing plans for the Blue Dot Lab, which aims to expand the number of graduates with computing, data, AI and related expertise as one of its primary focus areas. Concerned faculty and staff are wary of how the project promotes AI, the high price tag of the development, and also questioned if the facility would be accessible to all students.<\/span><\/p>\n Andrew Spear, a philosophy professor at GVSU, told the board of trustees on Feb. 6 that the project\u2019s high cost and the university\u2019s borrowing plan \u201chas many faculty surprised and upset.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Spear also said AI\u2019s prevalence has negatively affected faculty and has been used by students to cheat, harming their ability to learn. <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cBy funding, glorifying and prioritizing this technology and its current ethos so categorically, the university risks communicating to students the unimportance of what we have traditionally taught while investing heavily in what may in its current iteration turn out to be a hyped Silicon Valley bubble,\u201d Spear said.<\/span><\/p>\n Amy McFarland, the director and associate professor of environmental and sustainability studies at GVSU, suspects the university is shifting funds and resources to support the Blue Dot Lab project. <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019ve been asked to identify ways that we could reduce our budgets by 5%, and last year, student tuition increased by 4.5%, which is higher than it typically gets increased,\u201d McFarland said. \u201cPublic universities don\u2019t have unlimited resources when you take on large amounts of debt, those risks have to get paid back somehow and so I think we\u2019re seeing it in cuts to academic programs across the board.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The GVSU Board of Trustees on April 25, 2025 approved tuition and fee increases of 4.7% for the 2025-2026 school year. <\/span><\/p>\n \u201c(The project) is coming on the backs of student tuition dollars in order to pay that debt back, when it\u2019s not going to serve a vast majority of students, it\u2019s only going to serve a niche portion of our community,\u201d McFarland said. <\/span><\/p>\n Knape said the Blue Dot Lab is meant to offer opportunities to every GVSU student through classrooms, experiences, programs and partnerships. <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cGVSU has actively engaged faculty, staff, students, community partners and donors as this project has been developed over the past 10 years, including during our Campus Master Planning process,\u201d Knape said. \u201cWe are continuing to engage members of our community to help them learn more about the incredible impact this project will make on the lives of our students and the future of our state.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The Right Place Inc. has been championing the project, which is aligned with the economic development organization\u2019s ongoing effort of advocating for more investments in the tech industry. <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s certainly exciting seeing Blue Dot continuing to advance,\u201d Randy Thelen, CEO of The Right Place, told Crain\u2019s Grand Rapids Business. \u201cWhether you\u2019re a liberal arts student, a business student or a computing student, you\u2019re going to be exposed to tech through the Blue Dot effort.
