Eberhard Center and construct a $65 million technology lab as an addition to the building. The plan faced pushback from some faculty who raised cost and AI-related ethical concerns with the technology buildout.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Trustees voted to authorize issuing bonds not to exceed $139 million to support the development. Fishbeck will serve as the project\u2019s architect and engineer, and Pioneer Construction will be the general contractor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The bonds are expected to be issued pending authorization from the state Legislature and governor, said GVSU spokesperson Chris Knape. Credit: Fishbeck<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><b>Faculty pushback<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span>Meanwhile, a group of GVSU professors are critical of advancing plans for the Blue Dot Lab, which aims to expand the number of graduates with computing, data, AI and related expertise as one of its primary focus areas. Credit: Fishbeck<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span>\u201cWe\u2019ve been asked to identify ways that we could reduce our budgets by 5%, and last year, student tuition increased by 4.5%, which is higher than it typically gets increased,\u201d McFarland said. \u201cPublic universities don\u2019t have unlimited resources when you take on large amounts of debt, those risks have to get paid back somehow and so I think we\u2019re seeing it in cuts to academic programs across the board.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The GVSU Board of Trustees on April 25, 2025 approved tuition and fee increases of 4.7% for the 2025-2026 school year.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c(The project) is coming on the backs of student tuition dollars in order to pay that debt back, when it\u2019s not going to serve a vast majority of students, it\u2019s only going to serve a niche portion of our community,\u201d McFarland said.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Knape said the Blue Dot Lab is meant to offer opportunities to every GVSU student through classrooms, experiences, programs and partnerships.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cGVSU has actively engaged faculty, staff, students, community partners and donors as this project has been developed over the past 10 years, including during our Campus Master Planning process,\u201d Knape said. \u201cWe are continuing to engage members of our community to help them learn more about the incredible impact this project will make on the lives of our students and the future of our state.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Right Place Inc. has been championing the project, which is aligned with the economic development organization\u2019s ongoing effort of advocating for more investments in the tech industry.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s certainly exciting seeing Blue Dot continuing to advance,\u201d Randy Thelen, CEO of The Right Place, told Crain\u2019s Grand Rapids Business. \u201cWhether you\u2019re a liberal arts student, a business student or a computing student, you\u2019re going to be exposed to tech through the Blue Dot effort.
