Andhra Pradesh enjoys a coastal length of 1,053 km-one of the longest in the country-and is strategically located in the central part of India’s eastern coast. The APMB, established by the govt to unlock the state’s coastal and maritime potential, has been driving a broader vision focused on sustainable, investor-led port and port-based industrial development<\/a>. The proposed shipbuilding and ship repair facility is seen as a key component of that vision. <\/p>\n

As part of this initiative, the APMB will float an RFP to set up a modern, investor-owned shipbuilding and ship repair facility at Machilipatnam<\/a>. “The project will be developed on a Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) basis, ensuring private sector efficiency while retaining long-term public oversight. The model is expected to attract experienced global and domestic players with proven technical and financial capabilities,” said special chief ecretary MT Krishna Babu. <\/p>\n

The groundwork for the project was already laid as the Tender Evaluation Committee (TEC) and the EPC already approved the draft RFP for the work of setting up the shipbuilding and ship repair facility at Machilipatnam<\/a>. The CEO of the AP Maritime Board<\/a> was authorised to take necessary action accordingly. Machilipatnam MP V Balashowry welcomed the decision, calling it a transformational step for the region. “Machilipatnam has waited decades for a large-scale maritime project<\/a> that can truly change the economic profile of the constituency. A shipbuilding and repair facility will not only generate thousands of jobs but also create opportunities for ancillary industries, skill development..,” Balashowry said. <\/p>\n
