HJ Shipbuilding & Construction has signed a shipbuilding contract worth 353.2 billion won with a European shipowner for two 10,100-TEU eco-friendly container vessels, with options for two additional units. The order marks the first time that container ships exceeding 10,000 TEU will be built at the company\u2019s Yeongdo Shipyard in Busan.<\/p>\n

The vessels are designed with a latest-generation hull form and high fuel efficiency to minimize greenhouse gas emissions, reflecting growing demand in the shipping industry for environmentally friendly ships. To comply with regulations set by the International Maritime Organization, the ships will be equipped with exhaust gas cleaning systems, or scrubbers, along with an optimized hull design for efficient operation.<\/p>\n

The contract is significant as it represents a new milestone for the Yeongdo Shipyard, which has a history of more than 90 years. While the yard has traditionally focused on mid-sized commercial vessels, HJ Shipbuilding & Construction has steadily expanded its technical capabilities to accommodate larger container ships.<\/p>\n

In 2004, the company attracted industry attention by developing the so-called \u201cDAM method\u201d to overcome dock length limitations at the Yeongdo Shipyard, enabling the construction of an 8,000-TEU container ship through underwater welding and hull assembly. Continued technological advances later allowed the company to build vessels without the DAM method, including the successful delivery of a 9,000-TEU methanol-powered container ship last year.<\/p>\n

Building on this track record, HJ Shipbuilding & Construction secured the latest order for 10,100-TEU container ships from a European shipowner. The deal also represents a repeat order, reflecting customer satisfaction with the quality of previously delivered container vessels.<\/p>\n

Over the past several years, the company has focused on developing mid-sized and environmentally friendly container ships to secure stable workloads and strengthen its competitiveness in the container ship segment. From the 5,500-TEU container ships that marked the resumption of its merchant ship orders in 2021 to the recently built 9,000-TEU methanol-fueled vessels for HMM, the designs have been optimized for the Yeongdo Shipyard.<\/p>\n

Yoo Sang-cheol, chief executive officer of HJ Shipbuilding & Construction, said the latest order demonstrates the company\u2019s ability to overcome physical constraints through continuous innovation. He added that the company aims to deliver high-quality vessels on schedule and further enhance its reputation in the mid- to large-sized eco-friendly container ship market.<\/p>\n
