It follows last year\u2019s launch of the inaugural Sound Investments report, which analysed the scale of private capital flowing into the UK music tech sector.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>MTUK\u2019s report comes amid a growing focus on music tech start-ups, including the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicweek.com\/digital\/read\/accelerator-programme-grow-music-confirms-2025-edition-as-it-marks-first-year-with-26-tech-firms\/091661\"><span>GrowMusic business support programme<\/span><\/a><span>, backed by the BPI, <\/span><span>London\u2019s growth agency London &amp; Partners and Abbey Road REDD.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Digital Catapult, in partnership with Sony Music UK and Sony Music Publishing UK, and in collaboration with Channel 4, recently announced the 12 start-ups joining the 2025 cohort of its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicweek.com\/digital\/read\/black-founders-programme-partners-with-channel-4-for-2025-edition\/092629\"><span>Black Founders Programme<\/span><\/a><span>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>The MTUK research shows that Innovate UK\u2019s investment amounted to 3.9% of total sector funding. This definition includes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicweek.com\/publishing\/read\/cisac-generative-ai-could-hit-music-creators-to-the-tune-of-10-billion-over-rest-of-the-decade\/090982\"><span>GenAI<\/span><\/a><span> companies, events\/ticketing companies, music production tech and sync technologies. If revenue is primarily from rights exploitation, then a company is considered part of the traditional music industry rather than music tech.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>The news comes as the UK government has announced a record \u00a3500m funding package for research, development and innovation in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicweek.com\/talent\/read\/government-to-back-high-growth-uk-music-industry-with-up-to-30-million-of-funding\/092172\"><span>creative industries<\/span><\/a><span>. It recognises the creative industries as central to the UK\u2019s economic future.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Innovate UK funding into music tech has tripled between 2020 and 2024, culminating in record funding of \u00a36.5 million in 2024.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>KEY FINDINGS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Between 2020 and 2024, Innovate UK funded a total of 141 awards across seven different funding categories. Approximately 85% of these (122 awards) were grants for R&amp;D.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Feasibility studies represented the second-largest category with 16 awards. Award recipients included AudioStack, Karno, Vochlea Music and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicweek.com\/talent\/read\/roex-research-highlights-audio-quality-challenges-for-diy-music-creators-and-producers\/090595\"><span>RoEx<\/span><\/a><span>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>This category was followed closely by 13 awards given to education-based music tech companies (MusicGurus, UCan Play, Future DJs), 12 to GenAI music companies (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicweek.com\/digital\/read\/ai-offers-new-solutions-and-possibilities-daaci-s-ethical-approach-to-artificial-intelligence\/088928\"><span>DAACI<\/span><\/a><span>, Bronze and soundpiece) and companies innovating in digital instruments\/music making (Noise Orchestra, World Choir), and 10 given to health\/ wellness-related music tech companies (Music In Mind Remote, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicweek.com\/digital\/read\/abbey-road-studios-names-medimusic-as-latest-start-up-for-incubation-programme\/086923\"><span>MediMusic<\/span><\/a><span>, Quietnote).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>London-based companies dominated music tech funding, capturing 59.55% of total Innovate UK awards, while the South East (10.21%) and North West (10.19%) were distant second and third.
