Shipping Adviser Brigadier General (Retd) M Sakhawat Hussain said the government would take a tough stance over the workers’ strike at Chattogram Port, adding that several people have already been detained and further detentions may follow.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“A strike at the Chattogram Port cannot be allowed to continue,” he said while speaking to reporters at the Secretariat today (8 February).<\/p>\n

Workers at the port began an indefinite strike from 8am today in protest against the government’s decision to lease the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) to a foreign company and in support of a four-point demand.<\/p>\n

The adviser said, “A handful of people are trying to hold the entire port hostage. Ramadan is only a few days away. We are conducting operations on the rivers every day. Chickpeas, lentils and oil are lying at the outer anchorage.”<\/p>\n

“They are holding 180 million people hostage. This cannot be allowed to continue. The government has decided to take a hard line. Several people have already been detained, and the rest will also be detained,” he added.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
