PHUKET – Marine authorities are rushing to remove the oil spill from the Andaman Sea after the sinking of the Panama\u2011flagged cargo ship about 3 miles off Laem Phromthep on Saturday while en route from Malaysia to Bangladesh.<\/p>\n

Sixteen crew members of SEALLOYD ARC were rescued and brought to safety in the evening when the ship took on water and sank as it passed south of the island’s viewing spot.<\/p>\n

SEALLOYD ARC was carrying 297 containers, 14 of them containing hazardous materials, according to the Thai Maritime Enforcement Command Centre (Thai-MECC) Region 3.<\/p>\n

All containers sank with the 4,339\u2011tonne vessel.<\/p>\n

An aerial survey detected an oil spill stretching westward, about 4.5 miles long and one mile wide, but there was no oil slick reported along Phuket’s coastline so far, the centre said.<\/p>\n

Authorities have assessed the incident as a large\u2011scale situation with expanding impacts on the environment and potential hazards to navigation.<\/p>\n

A command centre, chaired by Naval Area 3 commander VAdm Weerudom Muangchin, was set up on Sunday to coordinate agencies in managing the incident and restoring normal conditions as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n

Key urgent missions included removing the oil spill and containing further leakage to protect the environment, recovering containers to ensure navigation safety, using aerial surveys while surface vessels tow containers to secure areas and assessing environmental impacts. Situation briefings and operational planning were scheduled twice daily at 8am and 3pm.<\/p>\n

Phuket Governor Nirat Pongsitthaworn noted that although the vessel was foreign and not directly bound for Thailand, officials provided aid to the affected crew on humanitarian grounds.<\/p>\n
