Bengaluru: Union Minister for Railways, Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw<\/a>, unveiled Qualcomm\u2019s new 2-nanometre chip, calling it a major milestone for India\u2019s semiconductor and technology industry.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the inauguration of Texas Instruments\u2019 new R&D facility in Bengaluru on Saturday, Vaishnaw said, \u201cI am very happy to share that today we unveiled the 2-nanometre wafer and chip at Qualcomm. Companies are now designing end-to-end products in India.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Union Minister highlighted that India has moved beyond back-office development. “Gone are those days when most of the back office development was done here, and now from the entire customer product definition to design, the final silicon, getting it taped out and getting it validated, that entire thing is being done in India,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Vaishnaw thanked Qualcomm engineers for taking on the challenge of advanced chip design<\/a> in India, calling the achievement a \u201cmajor development for our country and our industry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Explaining the technical scale of the wafer, he said each die contains 20 to 30 billion transistors, with one die alone holding roughly 20 billion transistors\u2014equivalent to 2,000 crore or 20 lakh crore transistors. The tiny silicon chip integrates both GPU and CPU, forming a complete AI computing module.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe end product which comes out of this is a module which will be an AI computer on the desktop of any person on the edge, meaning on the camera, within the wifi router, or within any device on the machine or any moving car, automobile or train. That kind of development is happening,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Vaishnaw emphasised that this breakthrough positions India alongside global leaders in advanced chip design, including companies like AMD, and signals rapid progress in the semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem.<\/p>\n

\u201cThough the semiconductor sector is relatively new in the country, the Union Minister said the entire semiconductor ecosystem is rapidly taking shape and preparing for large-scale growth,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The launch underscores India\u2019s growing capabilities in semiconductor innovation, chip design, and AI hardware development, strengthening its position in the global technology landscape.<\/p>\n
