BAE Systems has launched a new technology incubator programme aimed at taking defence-developed technologies into wider commercial markets, with the initiative designed to support the creation of independent start-up businesses.<\/h4>\n

The programme, named Launchpad, is intended to help dual-use technologies move beyond prototype development by spinning them out into new ventures capable of scaling outside the defence sector. BAE Systems said the initiative aligns with priorities in the UK\u2019s Defence Industrial Strategy, including the need for \u201cconstant innovation at wartime pace\u201d and improved success in commercialising UK-developed technologies.<\/p>\n

According to the company, Launchpad will provide emerging businesses with access to customers across sectors such as energy and advanced manufacturing, while also supporting national objectives including rapid technology incubation, sovereign capability and economic growth. BAE Systems said the first company established under the programme is Rho-C, which is based on technology originally developed for submarine applications.<\/p>\n

The company stated that Rho-C will exploit technology enabling the transmission of power and data through solid materials, removing the need to drill holes for wiring. BAE Systems said the technology has potential applications in the oil and gas industry, where it could improve operational efficiency and safety.<\/p>\n

BAE Systems added that Rho-C is currently in the process of closing its first venture capital funding round.<\/p>\n

Julian Cracknell, Chief Technology and Information Officer at BAE Systems, said: \u201cBAE Systems has long been a leader in UK research and development and Launchpad represents an exciting evolution in how innovation is taken forwards. It allows us to bring to market agile start-ups that are increasingly vital to sectors beyond defence, including energy and advanced manufacturing.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

He added: \u201cIt helps more people use the innovative technology being developed by some of the smartest brains in the UK.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Rob Malkin, Chief Technology Officer at Rho-C, said: \u201cBAE Systems Launchpad has given us a highly effective, mature technology that we can quickly turn into a product. We\u2019re currently working on our first operational unit, which would never have happened this fast without BAE Systems\u2019 support.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

He added: \u201cThey\u2019ve given us access to their technology experts as well as help to set up and run our new company. We\u2019ve got a huge amount of interest from our first prospective customers and an exciting first year ahead of us.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
