Photo courtesy of Aaron Flaum on Facebook<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>A freight train&nbsp;derailed in Mansfield Depot on Thursday morning,&nbsp;with several railcars falling into the Willimantic River,&nbsp;causing&nbsp;a shelter-in-place order and a&nbsp;continuous,&nbsp;multi-day&nbsp;area closure&nbsp;and cleanup&nbsp;operation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The derailment&nbsp;happened&nbsp;around 9&nbsp;a.m. near&nbsp;the Eagleville Pond in the vicinity of Stafford Road, also known as Connecticut Route&nbsp;32, and involved a&nbsp;train&nbsp;with&nbsp;41 cars and&nbsp;two&nbsp;locomotives, according to officials.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The rear 10&nbsp;cars derailed,&nbsp;nine&nbsp;of which&nbsp;rolled over on their side&nbsp;with&nbsp;six&nbsp;carrying&nbsp;liquid propane fuel.&nbsp;Other cars on the train were transporting goods including lumber and&nbsp;food-grade&nbsp;grease.&nbsp;No leaks were detected from the cars&nbsp;containing propane,&nbsp;according to officials.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFortunately,&nbsp;with the lack of a leak, we didn\u2019t have to do any evacuations,\u201d said Adam&nbsp;Libros, Mansfield\u2019s emergency management&nbsp;director,&nbsp;Thursday afternoon.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In an abundance of caution, officials issued a shelter-in-place order for residents within a half mile of the scene.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is more of a \u2018keep your windows closed, be aware,&nbsp;be&nbsp;alert\u2019 [directive] just in case something does happen,\u201d said&nbsp;John&nbsp;Roache, Mansfield\u2019s&nbsp;fire chief&nbsp;during the press conference. \u201cWe continue to monitor\u2026&nbsp;to make sure there are no spills, no leaks, and no hazard to the community.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One conductor and one engineer were&nbsp;onboard&nbsp;the train&nbsp;when the derailment occurred, but no injuries were reported.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Although no dangerous propane leaks were detected,&nbsp;over&nbsp;2,000 gallons&nbsp;of grease&nbsp;spilled and had to be&nbsp;contained.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere does not appear to be any hazard to [the grease],\u201d&nbsp;Roache&nbsp;said. \u201cIt is basically animal fat.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Stafford Road&nbsp;remains&nbsp;closed to motorists between South Eagleville Road and Route 44&nbsp;East.&nbsp;Mansfield&nbsp;town officials&nbsp;said the&nbsp;area&nbsp;closure was&nbsp;anticipated&nbsp;to&nbsp;last days.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Emergency responders and hazmat crews from the Mansfield and University of Connecticut fire departments, the&nbsp;Connecticut Department of Energy and&nbsp;Environmental Protection and the&nbsp;Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection&nbsp;responded to the scene.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-opt-id=62103883  fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" width=\"696\" height=\"458\" data-attachment-id=\"167129\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/dailycampus.com\/2026\/02\/06\/freight-train-derailed-in-mansfield-route-32-closed-shelter-in-place-ordered\/derailment_2_cmyk_720\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/mlmjbqro95r8.i.optimole.com\/cb:bOxR.6a5\/w:auto\/h:auto\/q:mauto\/f:best\/https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dailycampus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/derailment_2_cmyk_720.jpg?fit=720%2C474&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"720,474\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"derailment_2_cmyk_720\" data-image-description data-image-caption data-medium-file=\"https:\/\/mlmjbqro95r8.i.optimole.com\/cb:bOxR.6a5\/w:auto\/h:auto\/q:mauto\/f:best\/https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dailycampus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/derailment_2_cmyk_720.jpg?fit=300%2C198&amp;ssl=1\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/mlmjbqro95r8.i.optimole.com\/cb:bOxR.6a5\/w:auto\/h:auto\/q:mauto\/f:best\/https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dailycampus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/derailment_2_cmyk_720.jpg?fit=696%2C458&amp;ssl=1\" src=\"https:\/\/mlmjbqro95r8.i.optimole.com\/cb:bOxR.6a5\/w:auto\/h:auto\/q:mauto\/f:best\/https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dailycampus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/derailment_2_cmyk_720.jpg?resize=696%2C458&amp;ssl=1\" alt class=\"wp-image-167129\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photos of the Mansfield train derailment. Photo courtesy of Aaron Flaum on Facebook<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe are going to do&nbsp;a continuous&nbsp;monitoring as long as it takes,&nbsp;as many days, whatever the time frame is,&nbsp;and that\u2019s going to be dependent on the train company and their recovery operations,\u201d said Rich&nbsp;Scalora, the emergency response coordinator&nbsp;for&nbsp;DEEP.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mansfield Town Manager Ryan&nbsp;Aylesworth&nbsp;declared a local state emergency&nbsp;to&nbsp;facilitate&nbsp;the response and cleanup operation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Although&nbsp;the University of&nbsp;Connecticut&nbsp;is&nbsp;located&nbsp;nearby to the incident, university officials said the accident \u201cdoes not have any impact on the operations or safety of UConn\u2019s campuses\u201d&nbsp;in&nbsp;a&nbsp;UConn Alert message, but recommended students and visitors to seek an alternate route during the closure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gwrr.com\/necr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New England Central Railroad<\/a>, operator of the freight train, dispatched&nbsp;additional&nbsp;crews from Maryland and Pennsylvania to&nbsp;assist&nbsp;with the cleanup.&nbsp;The railroad is a subsidiary of the international Genesee and&nbsp;Wyoming&nbsp;railroad holding company&nbsp;headquartered in Darien.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Brian McClain, vice president for G&amp;W\u2019s northeast division, said that the train originated in Palmer, Massachusetts and was&nbsp;en&nbsp;route southbound toward Willimantic.
