Four crew members lost their lives in a sudden and harrowing sequence of events in the ship\u2019s engine room area.<\/p>\n<p>The incident occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. on February 4, 2026, aboard the <em>MV Captain Virat<\/em> (also reported as a split barge owned by Guyana Port Inc.), which was moored at the Courtney Benn Wharf in Cummingsburg.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chain of Events in Confined Space<\/h3>\n<p>According to preliminary police reports, the tragedy began when two crew members entered a dry space in the lower section of the vessel near the engine room to conduct an inspection or repairs. They reportedly were overcome by suspected noxious fumes\u2014believed by investigators to potentially be carbon monoxide or chemical gases from a tank\u2014and collapsed instantly.<\/p>\n<p>In a desperate and heroic attempt to save their colleagues, the remaining two crew members entered the confined space one by one, only to be overcome by the same toxic atmosphere.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Deceased<\/h3>\n<p>The victims have been identified as:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Nerwaine Persaud<\/strong>, 57, Boat Captain (Cummings Lodge, ECD)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Getindra Sanchara<\/strong>, 25, Engineer (Cummings Lodge, ECD)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dominique Alexis<\/strong>, 33, Seaman (De Kinderen, WCD)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Brandon Deonarine<\/strong>, 18, Seaman (Support, EBD)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Reports indicate that Brandon Deonarine was the nephew of Captain Nerwaine Persaud, adding a deeper layer of tragedy to the loss for the affected families.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Official Investigation Underway<\/h3>\n<p>Emergency Medical Technicians and the Guyana Fire Service responded to the alarm raised by other crew members.
