A freight train derailment in eastern Connecticut on Thursday morning sent multiple rail cars, including several carrying flammable liquid propane, into nearby waterways, prompting emergency precautions and a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents.<\/p>\n

Officials said, however, that there were no immediate signs of propane leakage and no injuries reported.<\/p>\n

Local and state authorities said the derailment occurred around 9 a.m. in the town of Mansfield, near the point where Eagleville Lake meets the Willimantic River.<\/p>\n

Mansfield is a rural community in eastern Connecticut and home to the University of Connecticut, raising concerns early on about potential risks to public safety and the environment.<\/p>\n

During an afternoon briefing, Mansfield Fire Chief John Roache said the freight train consisted of 41 cars, a number of which detached and derailed under circumstances that remain unclear. Of the derailed cars, four carrying liquid propane ended up partially submerged in the water, while two additional cars transporting food-grade grease came to rest along the riverbanks.<\/p>\n

Roache said one of the grease cars was damaged in the derailment and leaked approximately 2,000 gallons (about 7,500 liters) of animal fat. The spill was quickly contained, and officials stressed there was no evidence that the grease entered the waterway. Environmental teams continue to monitor the area to ensure the spill does not pose a longer-term risk.<\/p>\n

Importantly, officials emphasized that the propane cars do not appear to be leaking. However, as a precaution, town leaders issued a shelter-in-place order for residents living within a half-mile (0.8-kilometer) radius of the derailment site.<\/p>\n

Late Thursday, officials confirmed that the order would remain in effect, though they reiterated that no evacuations have been ordered.<\/p>\n

Authorities urged residents to remain indoors, noting that liquid propane is odorless and would not be immediately detectable by smell if a leak were to occur. The town also closed a nearby roadway and began considering alternative bus routes to safely manage school dismissals amid the ongoing emergency response.<\/p>\n

Mansfield Town Manager Ryan Aylesworth said early assessments suggest there has been no serious environmental damage. State and local hazardous materials teams were deployed to the scene and placed hazmat containment booms in the water as a preventive measure, while continuously monitoring the derailed cars for any signs of leakage.<\/p>\n

\u201cFortunately, it seems under control,\u201d Aylesworth said, adding that officials remain cautious as conditions can change.<\/p>\n

Tom Ciuba, a spokesperson for New England Central Railroad, said specialized equipment was expected to arrive Thursday evening to begin the complex process of rerailing the affected cars. Due to the remote location of the derailment and harsh, frigid conditions, responders anticipate the recovery operation could take several days.<\/p>\n

Fire Chief Roache echoed that assessment, warning that the cleanup and rerailing would not be a quick process. \u201cIt\u2019s not going to be a today operation,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re going to have to get some cranes in there. It\u2019s going to take some time.\u201d<\/p>\n

The cause of the derailment remains under investigation as officials continue to monitor safety conditions and work toward restoring normal rail operations in the area.<\/p>\n
