This grant will enable MAP to enhance online self-help legal resources for all Michiganders.

LSC’s TIG program distributes annual grants to legal services providers across the United States.

Last year, LSC awarded 32 grants totaling $4.2 million for projects that leverage technology to improve legal services delivery to low-income Americans and increase access to high-quality legal services, the judicial system and legal information.

MAP will use the award to partner with Michigan Legal Help (MLH) in enhancing MichiganLegalHelp.org, a statewide website that helps people without lawyers address their legal issues.

This project will make “Do-It-Yourself” legal form tools easier to use, more accessible and more cost-effective to maintain.

TIG funding will also support improvements to the site’s accessibility and user experience. The goal is to ensure the platform effectively serves self-represented litigants across Michigan.

“For a challenge as major as closing the justice gap, we must make use of every tool at our disposal,” said LSC President Ron Flagg.

“Technology is already improving the capacity and accessibility of legal services. As tech continues to advance, LSC is working to ensure that the benefits of these tools are shared with all Americans, not just those with considerable resources.”

Established in 2000, the TIG program distributes grants annually to LSC-funded legal services providers. LSC has awarded 955 grants since the program’s inception, totaling more than $95 million to fund technology projects for legal aid. The TIG program supports innovative uses of technology and enhances the technical capacity of legal services organizations nationwide. This year’s awards are announced in tandem with a new LSC report, “The Next Frontier: Harnessing Technology to Close the Justice Gap.”

Senator Gary Peters and Representative Debbie Dingell (MI-6) congratulated MAP on receiving this funding.

“This funding will enable the Michigan Advocacy Program to help more Michiganders navigate the legal system and overcome the economic barriers that often prevent folks from getting the support they need,” said Sen. Peters. “I’ve been proud to support LSC during my time in the Senate and I’m glad that these resources are coming to Michigan.”?

“Too often, costs prevent people from getting the legal representation they deserve,” said Rep. Dingell. “Many Americans must face legal challenges including evictions, domestic violence, consumer fraud, or loss of benefits alone simply because they cannot afford a lawyer. These grants will help the Michigan Advocacy Program expand access to legal aid through a more accessible online platform. Everyone, regardless of income or ZIP code, deserves meaningful support, and this platform is a significant step toward addressing that inequity.”

Legal Services Corporation (LSC) is an independent nonprofit established by Congress in 1974 to provide financial support for civil legal aid to low-income Americans.

The Corporation currently provides funding to 130 independent nonprofit legal aid programs in every state, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories.

 ––––––––––––––––––––
 Subscribe to the Legal News!
https://www.legalnews.com/Home/Subscription
Full access to public notices, articles, columns, archives, statistics, calendar and more
Day Pass Only $4.95!
One-County $80/year
Three-County & Full Pass also available

… for projects that leverage technology to improve legal services … LSC President Ron Flagg. “Technology is already improving the capacity … of legal services.
