The Union Government moved a step closer to building an integrated, domestically anchored container ecosystem on Tuesday, with the signing of an MoU to establish the Bharat Container Shipping Line (BCSL).<\/p>\n

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, and Union Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw witnessed the signing. The MoU signals a coordinated push across shipping, ports, and rail-linked logistics.<\/p>\n

The BCSL MoU was signed with the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI), Container Corporation of India (CONCOR), Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA), Chennai Port Authority, and Sagarmala Finance Corporation Limited (SMFCL), under the aegis of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. The initiative operationalises the intent of the Container Manufacturing Assistance Scheme (CMAS) announced in the Union Budget 2026\u201327.<\/p>\n

Port expansion<\/h4>\n

Alongside this, a separate tripartite MoU was inked between VOCPA, Indian Railway Finance Corporation Limited (IRFC), and SMFCL to finance the Outer Harbour Project at VOCPA, Tuticorin. The agreement provides for joint funding of up to \u20b915,000 crore for eligible port capacity expansion projects under the Sagarmala Programme and the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, primarily through a Hybrid Annuity Model.<\/p>\n

Mr. Sonowal said the initiatives were strategic steps towards building national shipping capability in the container segment, enhancing port infrastructure, and advancing the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Maritime Amrit Kaal 2047. \u201cThe Bharat Container Shipping Line will anchor India\u2019s container trade in Indian hands and play a multiplier role in strengthening our strategic and commercial presence in global maritime trade,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Mr. Vaishnaw termed the launch of the container line a long-pending vision becoming reality, noting that it would help build a robust, world-class container ecosystem with investments of around \u20b915,000 crore.<\/p>\n

India\u2019s growing economy and rising trade volumes have underscored the need for a strong national container carrier, with officials noting that its absence has historically exposed exporters and importers to volatile freight rates and global supply shocks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
