That was up more than 1.8 per cent from YVR’s previous record: 26,379,870 in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted air travel around the world. Year-over-year, YVR’s passenger count was up 2.7 per cent in 2025, with 57 airlines flying non-stop to and from 129 destinations around the world.

The 365,000 tonnes of cargo carried on planes docking at YVR in 2025 was 7.7 per cent more than the record 339,000 tonnes of cargo that passed through the airport in 2024, according to the VAA.

“Strong operations and customer service combined with globally recognized innovation generated record results in 2025,” VAA’s president and CEO Tamara Vrooman said Monday in a news release.

Passengers on Asia-Pacific routes lead the growth

Passengers heading to and returning from Asia-Pacific destinations were the biggest driver for the airport’s passenger growth last year, with 604,444 more passengers between YVR and that region boarding or disembarking planes at YVR than in 2024. That is 15.6 per cent growth, to 4,474,757 passengers.

Fuelling growth in traffic between YVR and the Asia Pacific were a bevy of new flights.

New airline offerings in 2025, compared with 2024, included Air Canada flying round-trip to Manila four times per week, as well as to Beijing four times per week. T’way Airlines launched flights between Vancouver and Seoul four times per week last year, while China Southern launched non-stop flights between YVR and Guangzhou twice weekly last year and China Eastern launched twice-weekly fights between YVR and Shanghai.

Airlines also added service on routes between YVR and the Asia Pacific. For example, Air Canada increased its flights between YVR and Shanghai to seven per week, up from four. Zip Air increased its service between YVR and Tokyo to six times per week, up from four.

Travel between YVR and the Asia Pacific is poised to next year also increase because Air Canada plans to change its seasonal service between YVR and Bangkok so it operates year-round. In December, the airline plans to launch flights between YVR and Sapporo three times per week.

Domestic travel was also strong

Domestic travel is by far the largest segment for travellers, with about 49.6 per cent of all travellers being on domestic routes. Still, in raw numbers, the 490,376 additional domestic travellers on flights within Canada in 2025, compared to 2024, was far behind the number of additional people on flights between YVR and Asia-Pacific destinations. Overall, the airport saw 13,347,995 travellers on domestic flights into or out of YVR last year, up 3.8 per cent from 2024.

The political rift between Canada and the U.S., the two countries’ trade war and the Buy Canadian movement was likely the reason that far fewer travellers were on flights between YVR and the United States last year than they were in 2024.

VAA data show 6,161,520 passengers on what the airport authority calls “transborder” flights in 2025, down 7.1 per cent from 6,631,214 such passengers in 2024. The extent of the decline in passengers on those flights deepened through the year, given that there was a 14.3 per cent decline in passengers on those flights in December, compared with December 2024.

Travel between YVR non-stop to and from European destinations was another source of growth, with 6.3 per cent more passengers on those flights in 2025 (1,779,252) than in 2024 (1,673,043), according to the VAA.

The VAA touted its position as Canada’s second-busiest airport and its role as an economic engine, contributing what it calculated to be more than $15 billion to Canada’s GDP each year.

The VAA explained that a year-round wide-body international route, such as T’Way’s service to Seoul, which launched in July, is estimated to generate $39.8 million in economic output, $20.8 million in gross domestic product and 237 full-time jobs in the province.

[email protected]

twitter.com/GlenKorstrom

Bluesky.com/glenkorstrom.bsky.social

… and 365,000 tonnes of cargo last year Vancouver International Airport … in 2025Â for passengers and cargo, according to data that its … .
