Cargo agents at Murtala Muhammed Airport have halted cargo processing in protest against the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria\u2019s upward review of cargo tariffs. The dispute emerged last week after The PUNCH<\/em> reported FAAN\u2019s plan to increase cargo rates.\n<\/p>\n

The National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders confirmed the suspension of cargo operations to our correspondent on Monday, while another group said the new tariff has been temporarily suspended.\n<\/p>\n

FAAN, through a letter to cargo agents on January 27, 2026, had notified operators that a revised tariff regime would take effect on Monday, February 2, 2026, a move that was met with resistance by the agents.\n<\/p>\n

The PUNCH <\/em>reports that the agents had written to security agencies, including the Police, Customs, Immigration, and the Department of State Services, highlighting their objections. FAAN had planned to increase cargo tariffs from N7 per kilogram to N25 per kilogram\u2014a 257 per cent hike.<\/p>\n

Speaking with The PUNCH, Deputy President of NAGAFF, Segun Musa, said the agents downed tools in response to FAAN\u2019s attempt to implement the new tariff.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cOur people have decided not to process cargo because they have refused to accept the new price. We are watching from afar because our people are not ready to pay the new rate; it is our general resolve,\u201d Musa said.\n<\/p>\n

The President of the Africa Association of Professional Freight Forwarders and Logistics, Frank Ogunnojemite, also informed our correspondent that FAAN has not yet enforced the tariff increase.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor now, the new rate is suspended, and we are still on the ground. We still hope to have a meeting with FAAN on the issue, but as of now, the meeting has not been held,\u201d Ogunnojemite said.\n<\/p>\n

He added that cargo agents had met with the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc and Skyway Aviation Handling Company Plc to discuss the matter.\n<\/p>\n

Ogunnojemite explained that officials from FAAN\u2019s Cargo Development and Services department, assisted by personnel from the Department of State Services, were present at the Hajj and cargo terminals to enforce the new tariff.\n<\/p>\n

He noted that any increase should not exceed 25 per cent, in line with Federal Government guidelines.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cIf FAAN is suspending the new tariff, they should inform us by letter. Any unofficial communication is a rumour. We are still waiting for FAAN to take the right step to return to the old rates. Even any increment in rates should not be more than 25 per cent as recognised by the Federal Government, not a 257 per cent increase,\u201d he said.\n<\/p>\n

When contacted, FAAN spokesperson Henry Agbebire said the agency was not backing down on the tariff increase.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cAside from a few attempts to create a scene, operations were smooth today, and this is not something FAAN is considering reversing. The agents are complying, and we are forging ahead with the new tariff,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
