Jobs with the Japanese companies accounted for just over 60 per cent of auto assembly employment as of 2024, the report found.<\/p>\n<p>Brendan Sweeney, Trillium Network&#8217;s managing director, says the changes over the past decade show how the U.S. and Japanese companies have set different priorities for conducting business in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#8217;s just this general long-term move away from Canada from U.S.-based automakers,\u201d Sweeney said. That retooling has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/carney-stellantis-brampton-plant-9.6940891\" target=\"_blank\">since been paused<\/a> at the Brampton plant, though it&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-ford-motor-co-retooling-oakville-plant-despite-tariff-threat\/\">continuing as planned<\/a> at the latter facility. Stellantis also initially cut a shift at its Windsor, Ont., plant last year before announcing it would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/windsor\/windsor-stellantis-third-shift-1.7629256\" target=\"_blank\"><u>reintroduce a third shift<\/u><\/a> at the facility in anticipation of increased demand for the vehicles made there.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Industry struggling before tariffs<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s tariffs have hit the auto industry hard \u2014 Canadian-made vehicles are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/trump-auto-tariffs-1.7494185\" target=\"_blank\"><u>tariffed at 25 per cent<\/u><\/a>, with some exemptions for their U.S. components.<\/p>\n<p>But Sweeney says U.S.-based automakers were already decreasing their production here, making the trade war just the latest hurdle for the industry. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s the season and the episode; it&#8217;s the book and the chapter,\u201d Sweeney said. \u201cThis has been 25 years in the making.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Brian Kingston, president and CEO of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers&#8217; Association, says the report doesn\u2019t show the whole picture. He says it&#8217;s focused too much on vehicle production and the Detroit Three&#8217;s contributions to research and development, as well as auto parts production.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe footprint [of the Detroit Three] is far larger than what is presented in this report,\u201d Kingston said.
