Passenger vehicle sales were off to a strong start in the new year with carmakers across board reporting healthy growth in demand in January.Sales at homegrown auto majors Tata Motors<\/a> and Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) went up by 46% and 25%, respectively, compared to the same period last year.

Nalinikanth Gollagunta, CEO, Automotive Division, M&M, said, \u201cBuilding on the strong momentum of last year’s performance, we began the year on a strong note in January by achieving SUV sales of 63,510 units, a growth of 25%. On Jan 14, we opened bookings for XUV7XO and XEV 9S clocking 93,689 bookings for a booking value of Rs. 20,500 Crore \u2013 a record breaking milestone in just 4 hours.\u201d
Korean rival Hyundai Motor India<\/a> saw sales volume rise by 9.5% to 59,107 units last month. This is the highest-ever monthly sales recorded by the company and has come at a time when Indian management for the first time is at the helm at the Indian subsidiary. At Toyota Kirloskar<\/a> Motor (TKM) sales increased 17% to 30,630 units in January. Sabari Manohar, Executive Vice President, Sales-Service-Used Car Business, Toyota Kirloskar Motor,confirmed, \u201cThe year 2026 (has) started on a positive and encouraging note, with continued momentum of our product portfolio.\u201d<\/p>\n


In the two-wheeler segment too, demand remained robust. Chennai-based TVS Motor Company saw sales grow by 30% to 383,262 units in the month under review. Midsize motorcycle maker Royal Enfield too saw volumes expand 16% to 93,781 units. B Govindarajan, Managing Director, Eicher Motors<\/a> and Chief Executive Officer – Royal Enfield, said, \u201cThe new year has begun on a positive note for Royal Enfield- extending the strong momentum from the previous quarter and marking four consecutive months of healthy double-digit growth.\u201d
As regards sales of commercial vehicles, Tata Motors saw sales rise by 29.15 to 38,844 units. Sales of Eicher<\/a> branded trucks and buses in the local market went up by 23.6% to 9,729 units in January.Meanwhile, in the farm equipment sector, Mahindra sold 38,484 tractors during January 2026 registering a robust growth of 46% over last year. Veejay Nakra, President \u2013 Farm Equipment Business, Mahindra & Mahindra said \u201cHigh reservoir levels have supported record growth in Rabi sowing. Expectations of government support and higher allocation in rural development in the budget today should positively influence agriculture and farm mechanization in the coming months.\u201d<\/p>\n
