NEW DELHI: The Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her budget speech for 2026-27 announced the development of additional high-speed rail corridors in the country which will connect major cities with one another. Currently, the government is undertaking the construction of Mumbai\u2013Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor, which is being built based on Japan\u2019s Shinkansen bullet train technology.<\/p>\n

Seven high-speed rail corridors between cities as \u2018growth connectors\u2019 were announced between Mumbai-Pune, Pune-Hyderabad, Hyderabad-Bengaluru, Hyderabad-Chennai, Chennai-Bengaluru, Delhi-Varanasi, and Varanasi-Siliguri. The finance minister however did not detail whether the new high-speed corridors will be based on Shinkansen bullet train technology<\/p>\n

in which trains have a speed range between 260 to 320 kilometres per hour.<\/p>\n

The finance minister also announced the establishment of a new dedicated freight corridor connecting Dankuni in West Bengal to Surat in Gujarat as well as the operationalisation of 22 new national waterways over the next five years. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe Union Budget 2026\u201327 reinforces railways as a central pillar of India\u2019s infrastructure and logistics strategy. The announcement of seven high-speed rail corridors as \u2018growth connectors\u2019, along with a new Dedicated Freight Corridor between Dankuni and Surat, will significantly enhance passenger mobility, freight efficiency and regional economic integration,\u201d said Sudipta Mukherjee, Managing Director, Texmaco Rail & Engineering.<\/p>\n

Dibyanshi, Partner at Khaitan & Co, highlighted that the new high-speed corridors, freight connectivity as well as additional national waterways and coastal cargo promotion point to a clear focus on faster, greener cargo movement and last-mile connectivity. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe creation of an Infrastructure Risk Guarantee Fund, dedicated REITs for CPSE real estate recycling, and a \u20b95,000 crore outlay for City Economic Regions in Tier II and III cities further underline the intent to de-risk long-gestation projects and anchor logistics growth where demand is actually emerging,\u201d Dibyanshu added.<\/p>\n

With a focus on cargo movement, the finance minister also outlined an ambitious plan on container manufacturing. The budget outlined a proposal for a scheme for domestic container manufacturing ecosystem with an outlay of \u20b910,000 crore over a period of five years.
