Technology has advanced quite a bit over the years and at speeds previously unimaginable.<\/p>\n

But now area veterans have a new resource to help them learn about modern-day computers, the internet and other technologies.<\/p>\n

Lee County Veterans Affairs, located at 220 S. 7th St. Building 1 in Montrose, has been hosting its Veterans Tech Support classes from 4-5 p.m. every first and third Wednesday of the month for a few months now.<\/p>\n

The program allows veterans the opportunity to receive on-site technology access with 20-minute classroom instruction sessions and 40-minute practice and question sessions.<\/p>\n

Some of the topics class topics include how to use email, social media, Bluetooth technology, YouTube, artificial intelligence, and more.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur class is just basic, basic tech stuff,\u201d explained Nikki Sugars, administrator of Lee County Veterans Affairs, who added one area of focus the class is offering is helping veterans learn how to access their benefits online.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they just need help (accessing their VA account) to do their prescription (medications) or contact their provider through the VA, we\u2019re here to help them with that.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re also here to help them (learn how to access their emails). Just whatever tech support they may need…<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a curriculum that\u2019s built for us, and we can choose from those plans. But so far, we haven\u2019t had anybody come (take advantage of the lessons).\u201d<\/p>\n

Sugars stressed that the classes are designed to let veterans guide the lessons to suit their needs and help set up online accounts for VA services.<\/p>\n

Another focus of the classes is to help veterans navigate the technology required for telehealth services that some, especially those who may live in more rural areas, may need.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re truly in the business of helping (veterans) be able function and be file their own claims and follow their claims and help them with their medical services or whatever they may need,\u201d Sugars said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been helping people to set up (telehealth appointments) online. Most of those are for mental health, so their are privacy concerns…a lot of people really don\u2019t want to travel to talk to somebody that they don\u2019t know, and the VA has had more success with virtual appointments and veterans being more comfortable in their own home to discuss (post traumatic stress disorder issues) and things like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The classes are free for veterans, and no registration is necessary before attending any classes.<\/p>\n

And Sugars said educating vets about available online tools not only speeds up certain processes, but also allows VA staff more time to help with other needs and concerns.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe absolutely want to help our veterans so they can help themselves,\u201d Sugars said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost veterans are fairly proud individuals and would like to do things on their own, and we\u2019re trying to remove as many barriers to their own ability to help themselves as we can…<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s important to help our veterans feel like they\u2019re still valid people, because they are.\u201d<\/p>\n
