The management of Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, has partnered with an international firm, MiGO Mobile, to inaugurate a technology hub aimed at strengthening research, innovation and skills development among Nigerian students.\n<\/p>\n

The hub, christened the Care and Research Development Centre, was unveiled during an event held at the CUCRID Auditorium of the university on Thursday, according to a statement shared with Saturday PUNCH.\n<\/p>\n

Speaking at the launch, the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of MiGO Mobile, George Evans, said the collaboration was a deliberate move to equip students with cutting-edge technological skills while fostering a strong research and development culture within the academic environment.\n<\/p>\n

According to Evans, the initiative was driven by what he described as \u201cthe audacity to dare to dream,\u201d noting that meaningful impact often begins with vision, focus and the courage to act.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, it\u2019s really not about products; it\u2019s about building a legacy,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s about working with people and helping the next generation to see themselves first, so they can believe they can do it and ultimately take that step.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

He added that investing in education had a ripple effect on society, stressing that training individuals ultimately contributes to national development.\n<\/p>\n

Evans also disclosed plans to expand access to MiGO products through a partnership with telecommunications giant MTN, saying the company would soon begin a pilot scheme to make its smartphones available at selected MTN outlets.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the things we want to do, starting from next week or next month, is to have our MIGO mobile smartphones available across MTN locations,\u201d he said.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will begin with a pilot in about 16 locations, and based on the outcome, we will scale up.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Expressing satisfaction with the collaboration, the MiGO chief executive described Covenant University as the right partner, citing shared values and a common vision for innovation and impact.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m very happy. We have a partner that believes in a shared vision and shared goals, and has a proven track record. This is the right partnership,\u201d he said.\n<\/p>\n

Evans explained that beyond product displays, MiGO\u2019s operations were anchored on strong service delivery, research and development, as well as an expanding maintenance network.\n<\/p>\n

He said that the firm currently operates about seven maintenance offices in Lagos and is working with partners to establish additional service centres in 28 locations nationwide.\n<\/p>\n

Evans listed MiGO\u2019s product range to include innovative laptops, smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, wearables and power banks, noting that the company\u2019s focus was on producing affordable technology solutions.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll see what the future brings, but this is where we are starting from,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Timothy Anake, expressed his excitement at the launch of the new technology hub, describing the moment as \u201cthe joy of a mother who has just given birth to a baby.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

He said the Care and Research Development Centre would have far-reaching impact not only for students, but also for faculty, staff, and the wider community.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is exactly the kind of initiative universities should pursue for the benefit of their communities,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are really grateful for this partnership with MIGO, and we look forward to doing more things together.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Anake highlighted the opportunities the partnership would provide, noting that students would gain exposure to first-hand technology transfer, participate in the research and development of MiGO products, and have the chance to intern and eventually secure employment with the company.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is more, we have the ambassadors and the scholarship winners, and this initiative is going to be an annual one. Today we saw two, tomorrow another number, and the numbers will continue to grow. Before long, the entire community could benefit from the MIGO scholarship,\u201d he added.\n<\/p>\n

Reflecting on the journey that brought the centre to fruition, the Vice Chancellor praised the tenacity, commitment, and dedication behind the project.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we see today speaks to vision and alignment in action. There is alignment in vision and in impact\u2014across inspiration, empowerment, and training,\u201d he said.\n<\/p>\n

Looking at the students in attendance, the VC said the centre would inspire them to change the world.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cA dog gives birth to a dog; lions give birth to lions. They may be called eagles, but they are eagles with the strength of a lion\u2014guided by vision. The best vision is not just what you see from afar; it is the one you wake up with and decide to run with.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Anake described Covenant University itself as a product of vision and said the MiGO partnership represented another realisation of that vision.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cAt Covenant University, we are deeply committed to digital transformation. We ensure that our graduates leave fully equipped with industry-ready skills.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat you are seeing today is part of our broader drive to produce empowered, industry-ready graduates who can make an impact globally,\u201d he said.\n<\/p>\n

The Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Lanre Amodu, described the partnership as a milestone in strategic collaboration and innovation, noting that the initiative reflects the university\u2019s commitment to creating impact locally and globally.<\/p>\n

The highlight of the event was the presentation of scholarships to two Covenant University students, alongside ambassadorial awards to four other students.\n<\/p>\n

The scholarship recipients are Ayomide Ogunmola, a 100-level student, who received a N10m scholarship covering full tuition from 100 to 500 level, and David Ibiyemi, a 500-level student, who was awarded N2.2m. <\/p>\n
