Register<\/a> <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n East Midlands Airport ended its 60th anniversary year with one of the strongest year-on-year increases in cargo volumes on record, according to newly released figures.<\/p>\n In December, the airport handled nearly 38,000 tonnes of freight, representing a 37% increase compared with the same month the previous year.<\/p>\n This was the third largest year-on-year rise in the airport\u2019s history, exceeded only during two months of the Covid-19 pandemic when lockdown conditions drove unusually high demand across the freight sector.<\/p>\n For the current financial year to date, starting in April, cargo throughput at East Midlands Airport has reached 313,615 tonnes. On current trends, this puts the operation on course to exceed last year\u2019s total of around 370,000 tonnes.<\/p>\n The growth has been linked to increased demand from India, south-west and central Asia, and the United Arab Emirates, as supply chains adjusted to geopolitical disruption and changes in global trading conditions, including the impact of US tariff policies.<\/p>\n During 2025, the airport also attracted seven additional cargo operators as capacity constraints at other UK and European gateways prompted airlines to seek alternative hubs.<\/p>\n Steve Griffiths, Managing Director at East Midlands Airport, said: \u201cThe data shows continued momentum in our cargo operation and provides confidence as we plan for future growth. Our focus is on ensuring we have the infrastructure and capacity in place to respond to changing trade patterns and increased demand over the long term.\u201d<\/p>\n New operators include Hong Kong Cargo, Atlas Air, Ethiopian Cargo, Saudia Cargo, Etihad Cargo, SF Express and Central Airlines.<\/p>\n Chinese logistics firm YunExpress is expected to open a new cargo warehouse at the airport in the coming months to support Central Airlines\u2019 operations.<\/p>\n To support longer-term growth, the airport is progressing plans to bring forward up to 50 hectares of land adjacent to the runway for cargo development.<\/p>\n The proposals include new taxiways and aprons that would allow for up to 18 additional aircraft stands, in response to forecasts indicating a 54% increase in cargo demand at the airport by 2043.<\/p>\n Two of the proposed development sites fall within the East Midlands Freeport, where the airport acts as the primary port.<\/p>\n These sites offer tax incentives and other measures aimed at attracting logistics and manufacturing occupiers.
