(Heads up: You\u2019re going to see more than one reference to \u201csupercharging\u201d things here.)<\/p>\n<p>Numerous tech companies and organizations applauded the FCC\u2019s move when it was proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fierce-network.com\/wireless\/fcc-expand-use-wi-fi-6-ghz-band\" target=\"_blank\">earlier this month,<\/a> and the FCC compiled their statements in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/document\/what-they-are-saying-stakeholders-applaud-tomorrows-6-ghz-vote\" target=\"_blank\">one big press release<\/a> distributed on Wednesday and redistributed today.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe appreciate the FCC\u2019s leadership in adopting new regulations to support American innovation. By clearing the path for companies like ours, this decision will spur the next wave of breakthroughs in the wearables industry to keep America at the cutting edge of technology,\u201d said Kevin Martin, VP, head of Global Policy at Meta, who served as FCC chairman from 2005-2009.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe proposed 6\u202fGHz Geofenced Variable Power (GVP) device category will extend Wi\u2011Fi performance \u2013 a crucial move to broaden the rapidly growing 6\u202fGHz Wi\u2011Fi ecosystem, support next-generation use cases, and drive innovation and economic development,\u201d said Alexander Roytblat, VP, Worldwide Regulatory Affairs at the Wi-Fi Alliance.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, some of the same groups quoted in the FCC\u2019s press release provided new statements today applauding the FCC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe FCC\u2019s vote to expand unlicensed operations in the 6 GHz band is a major win for American innovation,\u201d said Gary Shapiro, CEO of the Consumer Technology Association (CTA). \u201cUnlicensed spectrum is the foundation for transformative technologies like Wi-Fi, and opening more of the 6 GHz band will supercharge the next wave of innovation, including augmented reality, virtual reality, and other game-changing applications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>FCC Chairman Brendan Carr referenced the 6 GHz proceeding when he and Shapiro met at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ces.tech\/schedule\/fireside-chat-with-the-fcc-chair\/\" target=\"_blank\">earlier this month<\/a>. \u201cWe\u2019re going to effectively be supercharging Wi-Fi,\u201d Carr said.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Carr noted all the gadgets he saw at CES, including Wi-Fi 8 routers and chips being launched as soon as this year. He then segued into the creation of \u201ca new class of devices known as geofenced variable power devices (a name that just rolls right off the tongue). These devices can operate at higher power and \u2013 unlike previous device categories \u2013 can be used both indoors and outdoors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cWith these devices, we are finally filling an important gap left open by our previous decisions.&nbsp;To make it possible, we will use geofencing to protect incumbent users from interference.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What about the CBRS band?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>During a press conference after today\u2019s open meeting, Carr was asked whether he wants to see modifications to the Citizens Band Radio Service (CBRS) band, one that has been the subject of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fierce-network.com\/wireless\/cbrs-alliance-all-reasons-relocation-stupid-idea\" target=\"_blank\">a controversial proposal to move it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Carr didn\u2019t address CBRS specifically, saying they took a big step forward today in the 6 GHz band and have a \u201creally full agenda\u201d on spectrum.
