January 30, (THEWILL) \u2014 The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) will implement a new cargo tariff structure from February 2, significantly increasing charges across key logistics services, in a move expected to raise air freight costs for traders and logistics firms.<\/p>\n

Under the revised framework, port charges on cargo will rise from \u20a67 to \u20a620 per kilogram, reflecting nearly a threefold increase. Air cargo handling fees will also climb sharply, moving from \u20a65 to \u20a615 per kilogram, covering the processing and movement of goods within airport terminals.<\/p>\n

In addition, tariffs for transhipment cargo, courier services, and perishable goods will double from \u20a620 to \u20a640 per kilogram. These categories typically require specialised handling, faster turnaround times, and enhanced storage facilities.<\/p>\n

Industry players have expressed concern that the higher tariffs could increase the cost of imports and exports, potentially squeezing profit margins and weakening the competitiveness of Nigerian exporters who depend on air cargo for speed and reliability.<\/p>\n

FAAN, however, says the adjustment is aimed at improving service delivery, upgrading cargo infrastructure, and addressing rising operational costs at airports nationwide.<\/p>\n

The increase comes as Nigeria intensifies efforts to grow non-oil exports and strengthen aviation\u2019s role in trade facilitation, raising questions about how higher logistics costs may impact these ambitions.<\/p>\n
