Despite trailing after the first and second quarters, Newark Academy pushed back to secure a 42-39 win against Payne Tech in the preliminary round of the Essex County Tournament in Livingston.<\/p>\n

Newark Academy knocked down clutch free throws in the game\u2019s final minute to win a tournament game for the seventh straight season.<\/p>\n

Eden Avery led the way with 14 points and nine rebounds. Erica Reed added 11 points, seven rebounds, and six assists.<\/p>\n

Tamia Yaah (12 points), Sanai Fletcher (12 points), and Skylar Wesley (11 points) combined for 35 of Payne Tech\u2019s 39 points.<\/p>\n

Newark Academy, the No. 12 seed, advances to play No. 5 seed Glen Ridge in the first round of the Essex County Tournament. The Minutemen are 11-5.<\/p>\n
