HD Hyundai\u2019s Chairman<\/a>, Chung Ki-sun, recently met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss enhancing collaboration in the shipbuilding sector. This significant meeting took place on January 28, 2026, during the Global Energy Leaders Roundtable held at Modi\u2019s residence in New Delhi. The event was part of India Energy Week 2026 and attracted around 30 participants, including government ministers, representatives from state-owned enterprises, and CEOs from global corporations.<\/p>\n

During the roundtable, Chung expressed appreciation for Modi\u2019s commitment to advancing the shipbuilding industry in India. He emphasized the importance of ongoing support for HD Hyundai\u2019s cooperative projects in the country. \u201cHD Hyundai continues to maintain close cooperative relationships with India in various fields,\u201d Chung stated, highlighting India\u2019s role as a central part of the company\u2019s strategy for diversifying its overseas production bases. He expressed confidence that India would emerge as a new growth engine for HD Hyundai.<\/p>\n

Expanding Cooperation with Cochin Shipyard<\/h2>\n

In July 2022, HD Hyundai signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Cochin Shipyard, India\u2019s largest state-owned shipbuilder, to engage in the \u201cMaritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047<\/a>\u201d initiative, a strategic project launched by the Indian government. This agreement aims to foster collaboration in various areas, including design, procurement support, and productivity enhancement.<\/p>\n

HD Hyundai has broadened its partnership with Cochin Shipyard to include naval vessels. The company also signed an exclusive business agreement with the Tamil Nadu state government for joint shipyard construction. These initiatives are part of HD Hyundai\u2019s strategy to accelerate its entry into the Indian market, which includes pursuing crane business cooperation with state-owned BEML.<\/p>\n

The commitment to strengthening ties is mutual. In November 2022, Hardeep Singh Puri, India\u2019s Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, visited Korea, followed by Tamil Nadu State Minister of Industries Raja\u2019s visit in January 2023. Both officials toured HD Hyundai\u2019s Global R&D Center<\/a> and the Ulsan shipyard to explore further opportunities for collaboration.<\/p>\n
