Hyundai Mobis developing 5G telematics for AVs, U.S. Senate members to hear AV bill testimony<\/h4>\n

Hyundai Mobis is developing a 5G wireless communication-based antenna-integrated multi-function telematics control unit (MTCU) to strengthen its automotive electronics business in the mobility sector as the mobile communication generation transitions from 4G to 5G, according to a press release<\/a> from the company.<\/p>\n

The technology is being prepared for global automakers to use in mass-production applications to enhance connected car services, such as high-precision maps, remote control for autonomous driving, and ultra-high-definition streaming.<\/p>\n

The release notes that currently, most vehicle telematics functions worldwide operate on 4G mobile communication. Hyundai Mobis is also currently mass-producing and supplying 4G-based telematics products. 4G-based communication allows over-the-air (OTA) updates, car-to-home services (connecting vehicles to smart homes), and infotainment content streaming, the release states.<\/p>\n

The new 5G-based solution is recognized as an essential technological capability to respond to the shift towards software-defined vehicles (SDVs).<\/p>\n

\u201cTo achieve rapid market entry in the next-generation connected car service sector, we will complete product development by the first half of this year and secure market leadership in the global market,\u201d said Jung Soo-Kyung, executive vice president and head of the automotive electronics business unit at Hyundai Mobis, in the release.<\/p>\n

The new solution will eliminate the need for externally protruding antennas, integrating antenna functionality into the built-in controller, according to the release.<\/p>\n

Hyundai Mobis showcased the newly developed product at this year\u2019s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) earlier this month.<\/p>\n

Amid technological advancements in the mobility sector, Politico reports<\/a> that the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee will hold a hearing Feb. 4 for autonomous vehicle \u201cplayers,\u201d including Tesla, Waymo, and the Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association, to testify on recommendations for a federal autonomous vehicle framework, the \u201cSafely Ensuring Lives Future Deployment and Research In Vehicle Evolution (SELF Drive) Act<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Politico, they will discuss how AV policy fits into the upcoming surface transportation reauthorization bill. The current bill expires at the end of September.<\/p>\n
