LEWISTON, Maine (WMTW) – A man is being treated for life-threatening injuries after he was struck by a freight train and became trapped underneath a railroad car, according to officials.<\/p>\n

Lewiston Fire Chief Mark Caron was the first to confirm to WMTW <\/a>that a man was struck by a CSX freight train on the tracks in the area of Riverside Street.<\/p>\n

The Lewiston Police Department later announced that first responders were dispatched to the railroad tracks in the area of Whipple Street at about 10:42 a.m.<\/p>\n

First responders found the man stuck beneath a railroad car. The man was freed by first responders and transported to Central Maine Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, police said.<\/p>\n

Police are not sharing the man\u2019s name at this time.<\/p>\n

The train was traveling south toward Auburn at the time of the incident. Police said investigators from the Railroad Authority are leading the investigation.<\/p>\n

Police said railroad cars were blocking traffic on Libby Avenue and Strawberry Avenue, so they asked drivers to seek alternate routes.<\/p>\n
