UNIONS welcomed new Cabinet Office guidance today that British firms in key sectors will be prioritised for government contracts.<\/p>\n

Contracts related to steel, shipbuilding, artificial intelligence (AI) and energy infrastructure will be used to back British industry amid rising concern about Britain\u2019s vulnerability to international supply chains.<\/p>\n

The measures include a new \u201cpublic interest test\u201d requiring Whitehall departments to consider whether outsourced contracts worth more than \u00a31 million could be better delivered in-house.<\/p>\n

The test is expected to cover 95 per cent of all central government contracts and follows Labour\u2019s pre-election pledge to bring about the \u201cbiggest wave of insourcing of public services for a generation.\u201d<\/p>\n

TUC general secretary Paul Nowak said: \u201cToday\u2019s announcement that the government is committed to ending outsourcing by default is an important first step towards ending wastage of public money and rebuilding our public services.<\/p>\n

\u201cMinisters must bring our public services back in-house \u2014 public services should be run for public good, not for profit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said that the announcement shows the government \u201chas been listening\u201d to campaigns for a \u201cbuy British rule\u201d for the steel industry as critical national infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Civil servants\u2019 union PCS general secretary Fran Heathcote said: \u201cThis could be a turning point if it leads to real change, but warm words won\u2019t be enough.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the government is serious about its pledge to deliver the biggest wave of insourcing in a generation, then this step needs to be taken and it must be backed by proper investment and protection for workers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Charlotte Brumpton-Childs, acting national secretary of the GMB union, said the proposals were \u201ccommon sense principles\u201d and \u201ca welcome step forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
