India \u200bhas bought its first cargo of Iranian liquefied petroleum \u2060gas in years after the U.S. temporarily removed sanctions<\/a> on Tehran\u2019s oil and refined fuels, LSG trade flows and three industry sources said.<\/p>\n

India had \u200cshunned energy purchases from Iran in 2019 under pressure from Western sanctions. The tanker was initially bound for \u200cChina, according to LSEG data.<\/p>\n

Sanctioned tanker Aurora carrying Iranian \u200cLPG \u2060is expected to shortly reach the west coast port \u2060of Mangalore, the sources said and LSEG data showed.<\/p>\n

The South Asian nation has been hit hard by the disruption of energy shipments via the Strait \u200bof Hormuz caused by the U.S.-Israeli \u200cwar with Iran.<\/p>\n

Three retailers to share LPG cargo<\/h4>\n

The Iranian LPG cargo will be shared among the three fuel retailers, Indian Oil Corp, Bharat Petroleum Corp , and Hindustan Petroleum \u200cCorp.<\/p>\n

The cargo has been purchased from a trader, and \u200bpayment will be made in rupees, the sources said, adding India is exploring buying more Iranian LPG cargoes.<\/p>\n

Still, \u2060an official said he was not aware of Iranian cargoes being bought.<\/p>\n

\u201c[There are] no loaded cargoes from Iran, we have \u200cnot heard of that,\u201d said Rajesh Kumar Sinha, special secretary in the federal shipping ministry said Wednesday at a press conference.<\/p>\n

The three companies and India\u2019s oil ministry did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comments.<\/p>\n

Most of imported LPG from West Asia<\/h4>\n

The world\u2019s second-largest LPG importer is battling its worst gas crisis \u200cin decades with the government cutting supplies for industries to shield households \u200bfrom any shortage of cooking gas.<\/p>\n

India consumed 33.15 million metric tons of LPG, or cooking gas, last year, with \u2060imports accounting for about 60% of demand. About 90% of those \u2060imports came from West Asia.<\/p>\n

India is gradually moving out its stranded LPG cargoes from the Strait of \u200cHormuz, with four LPG tankers moved so far–Shivalik, Nanda Devi, Pine Gas, and Jag Vasant.<\/p>\n

India is also loading LPG \u200bonto its empty vessels stranded in the Persian Gulf.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
