Google is announcing<\/a> a new version of Android Automotive that goes beyond infotainment use cases to control more of the car.<\/p>\n

At the moment, Google\u2019s Android Automotive OS (AAOS) lets carmakers \u201cbuild premium infotainment experiences while significantly reducing development costs and time to market.\u201d Besides customizing the interface, this includes Android apps for media streaming, navigation, and even games.<\/p>\n

Google today announced Android Automotive OS for Software Defined Vehicles (AAOS SDV) to extend \u201cbeyond the car\u2019s screen.\u201d <\/p>\n

Specifically, this \u201cprovides an open infrastructure for the non-safety parts of vehicles.\u201d This expanded purview might allow for in-car voice assistants that can control more vehicle functions, as well as proactive maintenance reminders. <\/p>\n

Over-the-air (OTA) updates can deliver more of these features over time.<\/p>\n

AAOS SDV is an alternative to how \u201cdifferent manufacturers have developed different software architectures, integrating software modules from dozens of different [suppliers].\u201d<\/p>\n

This fragmented approach means carmakers have to spend time on building infrastructure rather than what truly differentiates them in a fast-moving market.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Google is working with Qualcomm, Renault Group, and others in the industry on AAOS SDV. It will be available in open-source later this year. <\/p>\n
