We all know Waze. It\u2019s the crowdsourced GPS app that shows you exactly where traffic is, thanks to other drivers reporting slowdowns in real time. Crowdsourcing works for a lot of things. You can find the cheapest gas nearby. You can see how busy a restaurant is before you go. So here\u2019s the question I had:<\/p>\n

Why isn\u2019t there a Waze for TSA?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The problem with TSA wait times<\/strong><\/h2>\n

If you\u2019re heading to the airport, one of the biggest unknowns is how long you\u2019ll spend in the security line. Leave too early, and you\u2019re sitting at the gate forever. Leave too late, and you\u2019re racing through the terminal hoping you make your flight. You\u2019d think there would be an easy way to check TSA wait times before you leave home. But there really isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

\u25cf Airport websites sometimes list wait times, but they\u2019re not always accurate<\/p>\n

\u25cf The TSA website and app haven\u2019t been consistently updated during the government shutdown<\/p>\n

\u25cf And there\u2019s no simple, reliable tool that gives you real-time conditions<\/p>\n

 So I went looking for a solution.<\/p>\n

And came up empty.<\/p>\n

So I built one<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Instead of waiting for someone else to create it, I decided to build a simple version myself. It\u2019s a webpage on What the Tech that works a lot like Waze. Look for the link near the top of the homepage.<\/p>\n

How it works<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The idea is simple. Travelers report what they\u2019re seeing when they go through TSA.<\/p>\n

\u25cf How long did it take to get through?<\/p>\n

\u25cf Is the line backed up past the ropes?<\/p>\n

\u25cf Is it moving quickly?<\/p>\n

\u25cf How many lanes are open?<\/p>\n

You select your airport, and if someone has recently reported their experience, you\u2019ll see what the wait was like. The more people who use it, the better and more useful it becomes. Just like Waze.<\/p>\n

There is a catch<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Like any crowdsourced tool, it depends on participation. If no one reports their wait time, you won\u2019t see much information. And even when people do report, things can change quickly, especially during busy travel times. Right now, it\u2019s brand new, so there isn\u2019t much data yet. But when people start using it, it becomes something we\u2019ve never really had before. A real-world look at what\u2019s happening at TSA\u2026 in real time.<\/p>\n

Will it work?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

We\u2019ll find out.<\/p>\n

Waze didn\u2019t work very well either\u2026 until people started using it. If enough travelers take a few seconds to report what they\u2019re seeing, this could become a genuinely useful tool for anyone heading to the airport. And maybe take a little of the guesswork out of flying.<\/p>\n
