The United States Department of Agriculture<\/a> (USDA) announced a revision to the shipping regulations for Beta avocados grown in South Florida.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The federal agency is modifying maturity requirements for the variety in the state to allow shipping two weeks earlier than currently allowed.<\/strong> The green-skinned Beta is a mid-season avocado, typically available through October for Florida types, and a Guatemalan\/West Indian Hybrid. <\/span><\/p>\n

The new standards will take effect on April 8, 2026.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Beta\u2019s new USDA size shipment requirements<\/b><\/h2>\n

According to the new USDA guidelines, shipping times are now divided into four dates, ranging from A to D<\/strong>, with each letter corresponding to a specific weight and size reflecting the variety\u2019s time of maturation. For example, A is the largest fruit and matures quickest. Now, the shipping date for this size will go from August 8 to July 25, whereas B sizes will ship on August 1, C\u2019s on August 15, and D\u2019s on August 22. <\/span><\/p>\n

Shipping dates each year are set to the Monday nearest the maturity dates, and corresponding sizes and weights remain unchanged.<\/span><\/p>\n

The change in shipping times was recommended by the Avocado Administrative Committee<\/strong>, an industry organization that regularly sets and monitors the maturity standards for US avocados.<\/span><\/p>\n

After three years of testing the Beta\u2019s maturity, the committee\u2019s data shows the green-skinned avocado was maturing before set shipping dates due to changes in growing conditions and practices.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

According to the organization, the shift will ensure consumers receive quality, mature avocados<\/strong> and allow growers to get fruit to market earlier. According to the association, this will enable timely harvesting and reduce limb breakage and fruit loss.<\/span><\/p>\n
