In a significant move to bolster shipbuilding collaboration, South Korea\u2019s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) has reached out to Pennsylvania for support under the \u2018Make American Shipbuilding Great Again\u2019 (MASGA) initiative. During a recent meeting in Seoul, Deputy Minister Park Dong-il discussed potential tariff exemptions and other measures to enhance the operations of the Hanwha Philly Shipyard, which is poised for expansion and increased production capacity.<\/p>\n

Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation in Shipbuilding<\/h2>\n

On March 18, Deputy Minister Park met with Rick Siger, Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, to explore avenues for enhancing industrial cooperation between South Korea and the United States. The discussions focused on the shipbuilding sector, particularly following Hanwha Ocean\u2019s acquisition of the Philly Shipyard in 2024. This facility is currently engaged in constructing training ships and medium-sized tankers.<\/p>\n

Hanwha Ocean has ambitious plans to expand the shipyard\u2019s<\/a> capabilities, aiming to increase production from 1.5 vessels annually to over 10. To facilitate this growth, Deputy Minister Park emphasized the importance of state-level support in Pennsylvania. He outlined specific requests, including the acceleration of administrative processes for permits and licenses related to the shipyard\u2019s expansion, the proactive establishment of necessary infrastructure, and the designation of the area as a Philadelphia Maritime Prosperity Zone (MPZ). Additionally, he called for assistance with labor costs to ensure the shipyard\u2019s competitiveness.<\/p>\n

During the meeting, Deputy Minister Park also highlighted the need for tariff exemptions on shipbuilding materials and equipment, such as steel and parts, to streamline vessel construction in the U.S. He noted that South Korean shipbuilding firms are actively exploring various initiatives to support the MASGA project, which includes enhancing U.S. shipbuilding production capacity and workforce development.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, Park proposed cooperation plans linked to South Korea\u2019s export support programs for materials and equipment, as well as the upcoming \u2018Korea-U.S. Shipbuilding Cooperation Center,\u2019 set to open this year. He expressed optimism for increased collaboration across various sectors, including advancements in industrial Artificial Intelligence Transformation (AX), leveraging Pennsylvania\u2019s renowned universities and research institutions.<\/p>\n
