Canada is opening the door to a wave of cheap Chinese electric vehicles – in a move that risks undercutting US carmakers and escalating its trade clash with President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

Ottawa is working to fast-track a deal between domestic dealers and Chinese auto giants including BYD, Chery and Geely, with the first low-cost EVs expected to hit Canadian roads as soon as this year.<\/p>\n

The push comes as Trump ramps up tariffs and trade investigations against dozens of countries – including Canada – after the Supreme Court struck down<\/a> his latest attempt to impose sweeping global duties.<\/p>\n

Canada is expected to have low-cost Chinese electric vehicles enter the country by the end of this year, Jason Zhao, the director of Asian market development at automotive analysts DSMA, told Automotive News Canada. <\/a><\/p>\n

Under the new trade deal, Canada replaced its 100 percent tariff on Chinese-made cars with an import cap of 49,000 vehicles and a modest 6.1 percent duty. <\/p>\n

The previous tariff made it virtually impossible for Chinese brands to sell cars in Canada. <\/p>\n

The implications could stretch far beyond Canada. Because the two countries share tightly aligned safety and emissions standards, vehicles approved north of the border can often enter the US market with minimal friction.<\/p>\n

In effect, it places low-cost Chinese EVs just across the border from American consumers.<\/p>\n

Ford CEO Jim Farley has already warned such competition could pose an \u2018existential threat\u2019 to US automakers.<\/p>\n

The move leaves the US as the only major auto market that doesn’t allow Chinese cars to be easily sold. <\/p>\n

Under the new system, Chinese vehicles would account for roughly 3 percent of annual car sales. <\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Trump has been reeling from the Supreme Court’s last month’s strike down of his efforts to realign global trade in the US’s favor.<\/p>\n

Countries such as Mexico, China, the European Union, Singapore, Switzerland, Norway, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand, South Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan, Bangladesh, Japan and India all made the investigations list under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.<\/p>\n

While Canada wasn’t initially on the list, Trump swiftly included it in his expansion of 60 other countries. <\/p>\n

‘We are trying to move very quickly,’ US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told CNBC <\/a>Friday. ‘We are trying to move in a matter of months.’ ‘ <\/p>\n

Trump is also looking to renegotiate the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), putting at stake the $1.6trillion in annual<\/a> trade in goods with its partners. <\/p>\n

But his top trade advisor told Politico <\/a>in December that Trump would be willing to pull the US out of the pact if he can’t get the deal he wants. Trump also suggested he could negotiate separate deals with each country.<\/p>\n

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has framed the China deal as a way to push back against US influence.<\/p>\n

‘American hegemony, in particular, helped provide public goods, open sea lanes, a stable financial system, collective security and support for frameworks for resolving disputes,’ Carney said at the World Economic Forum in Davos.<\/p>\n

‘This bargain no longer works.’<\/p>\n

Carney later stressed that Canada has ‘no plans’ to pursue a full free-trade agreement with China – after Trump warned he would slap a 100 percent tariff on Canadian exports<\/a> if Ottawa struck a broader deal with Beijing.<\/p>\n

Still, US automakers are alarmed.<\/p>\n

GM chief executive Mary Barra<\/a> said in January that Canada’s deal to allow tens of thousands of inexpensive Chinese EVs into the country is a risk to North American auto manufacturing.<\/p>\n

‘I can’t explain why the decision was made in Canada,’ Barra said. ‘It becomes a very slippery slope.’<\/p>\n

By the end of the decade, at least half of those imported Chinese EVs would have to cost about $26,000 or less, and all vehicles would still need to meet Canada’s safety standards.<\/p>\n

Canada is also a big market for Detroit automakers. In 2025, Ford, GM and Stellantis sold more than 700,000 vehicles there.<\/p>\n

Because Canada’s safety and emissions rules closely match US standards, cars approved in Canada can be brought into the US with little trouble.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
