State-run Shipping Corporation of India<\/a> (SCI) on Wednesday said it has signed a contract with defence public service undertaking (PSU) Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd<\/a> (MDL) to build a 3,000 deadweight tonnage (DWT) methanol dual-fuel platform supply vessel<\/a> (PSV), marking its entry into alternative marine fuels<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The company said the shipbuilding contract<\/a> execution was signed on March 18, 2026, according to a regulatory filing.<\/p>\n

In a first for its fleet, SCI plans to operate the vessel on green methanol<\/a>, signalling a gradual pivot towards cleaner propulsion systems.<\/p>\n

Methanol, emerging as a viable marine fuel, allows shipowners to cut emissions without overhauling existing fuel infrastructure entirely, making it an increasingly adopted transition fuel in global shipping.<\/p>\n

Platform supply vessels are the logistical backbone of offshore oil and gas operations, ferrying fuel, drilling materials, water and crew to rigs located far from shore. Designed for stability and precise manoeuvring, these vessels operate in demanding sea conditions while maintaining steady supply lines.<\/p>\n

Shares of SCI rose after the announcement, hitting an intraday high of \u20b9244.80 before settling at \u20b9239. Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders shares also gained, hitting an intraday high of \u20b92,465 before closing at \u20b9 2,459.50, up \u20b997.20 or 4.11 per cent. <\/p>\n
