Operations at mechanical contractor Andy J. Egan Co. are \u201cfairly seamless\u201d a few months after the firm sold to a Southeast Michigan construction company as part of a strategy to grow AI technology use in construction, according to the firm\u2019s fourth generation president.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sylvan Inc. purchased the four-generation, Walker-based company on Oct. 31. The deal followed Sylvan\u2019s sale in March last year to E-3 Tech LLC, a private investment firm backed by Silicon Valley venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, which is working to grow AI-driven software across the range of construction service firms in the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPartnering with E-3 has given us stronger financial capabilities, therefore allowing us to take advantage of those opportunities that are in front of us,\u201d said Andy Jasper, president of Andy J. Egan Co. \u201cIt\u2019s enhancing what we were doing prior (to the deal), we\u2019re just able to do more of it now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Andy J. Egan Co. was founded in 1919 and has worked on several landmark projects in downtown Grand Rapids, including the Amway Grand Plaza tower, JW Marriott, Van Andel Institute and Helen DeVos Children\u2019s Hospital. The firm works on commercial, energy, health care, industrial, institutional and advanced manufacturing and technology projects, including data centers.<\/span><\/p>\n

The leadership at Andy J. Egan were intentional about succession planning leading up to the deal, Jasper said. Having the support of the two other companies has also given them the opportunity to expand the firm\u2019s workload. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c(Partnering) with Sylvan and E-3 is honestly allowing us to continue to take care of our employees on a much broader level,\u201d Jasper said. \u201cWe found that the opportunities that were in front of us were becoming more and more plentiful, and we didn\u2019t want to say no to them. E-3 and Sylvan are allowing us to have that broader capacity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The company is headquartered in Walker, with additional locations in Muskegon, Kalamazoo and St. Joseph-Benton Harbor. Andy J. Egan ranked fifth<\/span> <\/span><\/a>in Crain\u2019s most recent list of largest construction companies in West Michigan based on 2025 revenues, when it generated $340 million in revenue and employed 540 people. <\/span><\/p>\n

Andy J. Egan was working with Grand Rapids-based investment banking firm Charter Capital Partners, which is how they got connected to Sylvan and E-3. Charter Capital and Grand Rapids-based Warner Norcross + Judd LLP advised on the deal.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is new to us, we\u2019ve never gone through a process like this before,\u201d Jasper said. \u201cCharter Capital quarterbacked the deal, and Mark Streekstra and his team were fantastic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Streekstra said the deal meaningfully accelerates Andy J. Egan\u2019s next phase of growth by pouring more resources into the company\u2019s proven operating base.<\/span><\/p>\n
