Four men aboard a fishing boat were confirmed dead after their vessel collided with a cargo ship in waters near Misawa, Aomori Prefecture, early Tuesday, according to a report.<\/p>\n

The two ships \u2014 the 140-ton fishing ship No. 65 Kofuku Maru registered in Hachinohe, Aomori Prefecture, and the 748-ton cargo ship Suehiro Maru registered in Kure, Hiroshima Prefecture \u2014 collided about 20 kilometers off the coast of Misawa at around 1 a.m. on Tuesday, according to an NHK report, citing the Hachinohe Coast Guard Office.<\/p>\n

The fishing boat capsized, and all 13 crew members were thrown into the sea. They were later rescued, but four people were confirmed dead at the hospital. The remaining crew members were uninjured. There were no injuries reported for the crew on the cargo ship.<\/p>\n

Rescued crew members from the fishing boat said they had stopped the engine and were preparing to fish with their lights on when the cargo ship rammed into them, according to NHK. The Coast Guard office is currently investigating the incident.<\/p>\n

A previous incident was reported regarding a fishing boat with the same name and registered location back in April 2023, when an engineer on board was struck in the back of the head by a hook and injured, according to a Transport Safety Board report dated April 24, 2024.<\/p>\n

The board has dispatched two officials to investigate Tuesday’s incident.<\/p>\n

Weather and visibility were reported to be good around the waters where the incident occurred, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.<\/p>\n
