Lotus Technology has become the second automaker globally to obtain UN Regulation No. 171 (UN R171) certification from the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), and will deploy a highway navigation pilot (HNP) function to eligible Lotus Eletre owners across Europe from June 2026 via over-the-air (OTA) update. The milestone makes the Eletre the first China-built model to achieve UN R171 compliance.<\/p>\n

UN R171, which came into force in September 2024, is the world\u2019s first globally harmonised technical regulation for Level 2 driver control assistance systems (DCAS). It establishes standardised requirements across four areas: functional performance, dynamic control, system boundaries and human-machine interaction, with certification requiring both closed-course and real-road driving assessments.<\/p>\n

The Eletre hyper-SUV was jointly developed by Chinese and European engineering teams. Its advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) suite, Lotus For Me (known as Eletre X in Europe), is equipped with the Thor U chip and is planned to pursue UN R171 certification in due course, with additional functions to be delivered via OTA updates in phases.<\/p>\n

In a statement, Feng Qingfeng, Chief Executive of Lotus Tech, said: \u201cEletre\u2019s UN R171.01 certification marks a significant milestone for Lotus\u2019 end-to-end capabilities in R&D, validation, and adherence to global standards.
